12C confusion

Is there a link someone can point me to that has a complete description of all the different 12Cs? E.g. original vs. new vs. platinum vs. anniversary platinum, functions, quality, speed, ...

Hi, Evan;

AFAIK, there is one standard (gold) HP12C that had at least five different internals, maybe more. The first one when the HP12C was introduced, with flex circuit and two IC´s. Later, an updated version with single PCB and no flex circuit and the same basic electronics. Then I remember seeing at least two upgrades with different PCB layout, one of them with an Agilent chip. All of these use three LR44-type batteries. Then there is the last version with a single 3Vcc battery. I´m not sure if this last version had an upgrade.

After that, there are three different HP12C Platinum: first series, with some problems; second series with parenthesis, back space and undo; and the 25th. aniversary eddition. And there is the HP12C Prestige, sold in Brazil. The HP12C Prestige is essentially a regular, second series HP12C platinum with a new look, as it is the 25th. aniversary eddition. One small remark: the first series HP12C Platinum and its immediate upgraded predecessor can only be differentiated by looking at the [STO] and [RCL] keys, where one can see the parenthesis printed in blue, in the front, slanted face of these keys. Undo and backspace can also be seen in the [÷] and [-] keys, respectively.

Major differences are:

                         Operation  Mem prgm  CashFlow Extras
HP12C Gold RPN 99 stp 21
HP12C Platinum (first) RPN+ALG 399 stp 31
HP12C Platinum (second) RPN+ALG 399 stp 81 ( ) [<-] undo
HP12C Plat 25th. aniv. RPN+ALG 399 stp 81 ( ) [<-] undo
HP12C Prestige RPN+ALG 399 stp 81 ( ) [<-] undo

Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention. The three new models - 2nd-series Platinum, 25th aniversary eddition and Prestige - allow LCD contrast control:

[f][+]    darker
[f][-] lighter
Just that.

Thanks. I'll just stick with my 1981 12C.

Hi, Egard;

I am an Electrical Engineer and I own many HP calculators. In the financial area, I mainly act as a teacher, being Financial Math the main subject. I have one of each of the following: HP10BII, HP14B (Pioneer, original... good girl!), HP17BII, HP17BII+ and HP19BII. I also have two HP38C, one HP38E and one HP37E.

When teaching specific HP12C courses, I like to have some extra calculators with me in the classroom (there are always some students without calculators...), so I have four HP12C (one with three batteries, earlier nodel), four HP12C Platinum (one of the new series) and one HP12C Prestige (I'm waiting for a 25th. Aniv. unit). If I have to take only one of these with me for personal use, I take one of the three first-series Platinum and leave the others 'safe', at home.

Maybe having a newer Platinum in the pocket and leaving a 1981 HP12C at home is safer.

But this is just a thought of mine; please, if you do not feel like buying a new HP12C Platinum, simply disregard this suggestion.

Best regards.
