HP48SX with black LCD (photos inside)

Post: #2

I recently bought an HP48SX with a damaged LCD screen. You can find it on eBay if you search for item # 9733409611. At first, I thought the problem was dust in between the keyboard connectors and the PCB. However, given that the annunciators were always on, I guessed that the problem was with the LCD screen itself. When an annunciator was supposed to be on, all annunciators seemed darker. When no annunciators were on, the were still lit, but were less dark. I had a black LCD screen I pulled from an non-working HP48GX that I bought some time ago. (The original owner decided to squirt glue into the keyboard crevices, making the keyboard useless. I managed to salvage the motherboard for a different project.) Anyway, I thought people here might like to see an HP48SX with a crisp display.

Here are the results of my latest project:

Now that's how it should have been from the beginning:-)

I suddenly remembered reading about LCD defects. Turns out this particular calculator was among the batch with LCD problems. I was able to dig up some info on it.

Click here to read the comp.sys.hp48 post on the problem.

From the post:

"If a unit is failing for the above reasons, subject to
verification by the Corvallis Service Center, it will be covered as
part of the standard warranty, even if the standard warranty period
has expired."

Hehe, maybe I should have requested a replacement even though the warranty is expired. =)
