If you do a search on "completed listings" you will see that the 27S does not usually stray outside the $80-$160 box.

I am the 'Caesar guy'... and yes, I really want it for my collection... it seems that somebody has been enjoying outbidding me everytime just to piss me off! Anyway...

A few months ago I got caught up in the same bidding wars that you're in now over a NIB 27S. I had to pay about $300 for a new one, and it was one of my most expensive calcs and hard to get a nice one now. When more than one is offered, they go for less, but when only one is up for auction, then they're expensive, the 27S is rarely for sale.

Might I ask why you want that particular HP27s versus other models on ebay,past and present? It seems that the bidding war on it has gotten out of hand...and I should know as I am the lamewing guy who was bidding on it! I need another 27s as I acutally use them, but I think the bidding has gotten too much for my blood. I have no clue who the other folks are. Good luck on the auction.

Update...it seems our bidding war has caused temporary inflation on the "percevied" value of the 27s models. Another one just went up for $300.00.

I guess I will wait a month or two.

Hi Joe,

So, you are the one who pissed me off :pp I am joking too, no offence, and no prob ! :-)
I am very keen on the 27S as 1) it is rare 2) it is one of the most underrated machine here - let me explain:

I own a 19BII, which does almost everything the 27S does (except for base conversion) and much more... but in too bulky a package for a calculator with no I/O. I do prefer my 200LX to it, if you want the drawbacks of a bulky machine, you should at least get the advantages: I/O, large screen, full QWERTY keyboard.

The good thing about the 27S is that it is pocketable. It is the only scientific pocketable calculator with the most elegant and powerful solver ever done. I read the technical applications book and I got amazed that for a so-called 'non programmable' calculator, it can do conditionals, loops, intermediate variables, long variable names, with no need for prompts as all variables appear nicely in the solver automatically. It even has some kind of indirect adressing, at least for reading variables, through the list feature.
This is more programmability than most people will ever need on a pocket calculator. If you need more complexity than advanced formulas, you are likely to go for a notebook these days..

I just regret that you cannot define your own functions: imagine that you could do something like DEF F(X,Y)=SIN(X)*COS(Y) and reuse F within other formulas - there we go, this would be a true subroutine feature, that will leave the 27S with very little to be desired compared to let's say a 33S - but so much more user friendly for the commun user!

Too bad the 27S lasted so little time, and is underrated on this forum as it is not RPN. Yet, it is a beautiful thing! The 27S makes me (almost) agree with Valentin Albillo that RPN is obsolete ! :-) (no flame intended).

Hope you now see why I want to pay so much for this baby.

It might be in the members' best interest is we had some type of "I am bidding on this calc forum!" to avoid pushing the price up in the future. :)
Nonetheless, I will back off and not bid again. Can't do anything about anyone else.
You are right though about the 27s. If the 27s had RPN/ALG (like the 33s) and the programming capablities of the 42s it would be the only machine I would ever need for hand-held work. The equation support in the 27s is heads above the 33s (and I assume 32s). Yes I bought a 33s to play with and I might keep it (bug free). I wouldn't be so disappointed with the 33s if I hadn't used a 27s and a 42s.

I got a pristine HP-27S with manual on eBay within the past year for about $150.

A few months later, someone else got what also looked like a nice 27S, with manual *and* the "HP-27S/19B Technical Applications" book I wanted, for $127. Oh, well...


The HP-27S is a nice calc, intended for engineering manager who perhaps never learned RPN (unlike his cohort from the 1970's, who used the LED-based HP-27). I wanted a 27S for my collection of the 11 models of the Pioneer series, which will be complete after I receive my 22S. All of the 27S functionality is also found in one of its fellow high-end Pioneers: the 17B, 17BII, or 42S. However, the transcedental mathematical functions (e.g., trigonometrics and hyperbolics) can be included in equations on the 27S.

The 27S also has a menu of hyperbolics, which the 42S should have had.
