Your "try before buy" has me laughing, no where I know ( around where I live) lets you try a calculator before you buy as they're all in sealed packages.
Here in the UK the 49 and 33 and maybe others come in cardboard boxes.

The Office Depots around here have a lot of calculators out on display so you can play with them before buying. However, they're mostly TI's. The only HP I remember for a fact being out was a 12C.
I played with a 33s at WalMart before buying by pushing the buttons through the plastic (not an idea situation, but it works). That wouldn't work for a 49G+ even if they were available in stores (but without demo copies), since they're packaged without their batteries connected. I've never seen a 49G+ in any physical store in any shape or form.
