HP 33s displayed "memory clear"

HP33s displayed a flashing "Memory Clear" message during my normal calculation. Doesn't respond to any keystoke including "C-e^x-Summation" reset. Take batteries out, put back in. The calculator worked again, though everything in memory were lost. Pass the self-test after another reset.
Now the question: the low battery annunicator weren't on during my normal operation, though sometimes when I ran some long program it did show up. Is a just a matter of low power batteries in which the calculator failed to warn me, or what? Any idea?
