HP 40 G

Has HP made it just difficult, or impossible, to buy an HP 40G in the US ? I know you can order it from resellers in the UK but their prices seem exorbitant. When I query the HP sales orgs in the US I get the " DUH " response. Anyone else had any luck ?

The 40G is marketed for Europe, HP markets the 39G in the US, Value added taxes make the prices appear so high...

The HP-40G in the UK is sold as the 39G in North America. They cost about $90 or so. I've seen them available at Staples (an office supply store here in the US), some electroics stores, and CompUSA. I believe college bookstores are also selling them. In my experience, the 39G is easier to find than the 19BII!

My understanding is that the Calc's are similar but not identical. I was wondering if anyone had found a source in the U.S. Appears as though they must be purchased abroad. I guess I don't understand the reason for this.

The only difference seems to be the IR port, which is nonexistent in the European version (HP40G). Nobody wants this in the U.S. , but it seems, that especially in France teachers had the fear, that the pupils would "zap" the results through the classroom during tests.

This resulted in a rather low sales volume for some HP calcs.

Otherwise the 39G and 40G seem to be identical.

It appears (from HP's pages) that the HP39G has IR but no CAS, the HP40 has CAS but no IR.

The price in the UK appears to be 75pounds (including purchase tax of 17.5%. This would give an export price of approx $90 + local taxes + shipping + insurance.

You can buy a 40G in the US through Calcpro.com, in Corvallis Oregon, for $89.95 plus shipping.

FYI, if you want a 39G for $40, you can register for a two-day workshop in Portland Oregon on Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 2. It is being sponsored by HP and the Math Learning Center (http://www.mlc.pdx.edu) through Portland State University. I got a 49G for $50 in a similar workshop on Nov. 1 and 2. The 49G notebook/curricula was written by an Oregon State University professor and is an excellent step-by-step "manual" for learning the basics to the advanced level workings of the 49G (although programming is not covered).

I was told the 39G workshop is even better than the 49G workshop. The professor that taught the 49G workshop said the 39G is her favorite HP calculator (and she has been giving HP workshops since the 28S days).

The Math Learning Center is primarily geared toward equiping teachers/professors with learning aids to assist teachers in teaching math to students, (thus the name ;-).

I suggest you look at this webpage: http://www.mlc.pdx.edu/HP.Main.html . One of the bullets mentions "printed curriculum guides for the HP 39G, HP 49G, HP 6S, or HP 30S". This may, or may not, be describing the notebook I received. I tend to believe it is NOT the same, as mine is more instructional, versus a classroom lesson-planning resource.

As much as I would like to ask for some of these free materials, I feel I shouldn't (can't) because I'm an engineer, not a paid educator. And, of course, I don't want to ruin a good thing for teachers who can really use these resources (by taking advantage of the offer by asking for these free materials).

On the other hand, I don't think it would hurt to ask if the 49G "Quick Start Guide" notebook (or the items listed at this webpage) can be purchased. One thing I failed to clarify, is that like the HP 49G manual, the material is written from an Algebraic-entry standpoint.

Tom,

I had a chance to take a closer look at the HP 49G "Quick Start Guide" that I received at the MLC's 49G class.

It turns out the notebook consists of two parts: the first half is 104 pages long and is a how-to tutorial. The second half is 106 pages long and is a classroom lesson planning guide after all, as denoted by the "HP 49G Classroom Activities" footer at the bottom of each of these pages (geometric proofs and statistical exercises).
