HP-42S + 82240: what do NORM and TRACE modes do?

Hi all,

For the printer emulation in Free42, I need to find out what the NORM and TRACE printer modes are supposed to do -- what do they print, and when, and maybe what side effects they have (IIRC the HP-82143 prints programs in a compact format if TRACE mode is on; does the 42S/82240 combo do something similar? -- things like that).


Any information will be of help, and some samples (scans, INPRT grabs, whatever) would be terrific.

Hi, Thomas;

TRACE mode enables the HP42S printer output to literaly trace any calculator operation, even in a running program. Whatever you do will be "followed" by the IR output (ALPHA code for each key pressed, every resulting value, etc.).

NORM(al) mode enables the HP42S output to send all resulting display from operations to the printer. It's sort of a "short form" for TRACE.

If it helps, I can detail it for you and even "capture" some output data from an HP42S through an HP48G IR input (with inprt running) as an example of what you should have. In fact, I have already some stuff ready, I just need to find it. Just send me an e-mail with a valid e-address and I'll do that:

I believe in NORM the printer would print out all data entries and operation (+,-,*,/ etc..) but not print out any intermediate or final results.

you are correct, my fault. I remembered NORM was sort of a "restricted" trace, but I hasd in mind it followed the resulting actions. In fact, it follows the actions themselves, without intermediate results, unless you actually PRINT something.
