Hi dear friends...

my almost new hp 17bII, which i use very few and always worked very well began to have serius problems....

i fit it with new bateries yesterday ( i actually bought them for other calc) and it was working OK..i use the batteries a little for test a hp 12c and then i use the same batteries for my trusty 17BII (which already had worked with these batteries as i said)...but it´s not working well...in fact have a serious malfunction...as soon as i power it up..it shows the following message: STMPA DOPPIO SPZIO:

IT do appears to pass the selftest but as soon as it is recovered after this selftest returns again to this message: STMPA DOPPIO SPZIO: as waiting for a answer from the menu keys (which do not appear anyway)...i pushed the menu keys, the message dissapears but the things goes worst..the screen turned blank and do not work at all...if you wait a little and power it up again the cycle repeat...I would be VERY grateful if some of you could help me..it´s real pity to loose this excelent calculator...

Hi, Will;

I suspected that this is an italian message, so I used AltaVista Babel fish translator with the following sentece:

and it returned the following as the English equivalent:

Press double quantity space

In fact, this is one of the standard Italian messages available in the HP17BII (print with double space, or double space printing). I guess it is now locked in an internal loop with Italian language set as current language.

Have you tried to reset the calculator contents to the default? I mean, maybe after changing batteries with the HP12C (or any other calculator) you allowed a small quantity of electrostatic charge to interfere in the HP17BII circuits. You could try a brief short circuit (just a small touch) connecting the calculator's batteries contacts while the batteries are in. That would prevetn ESD to spread inside the calcualtor (as it seems this has already happened).

After that, try the calcualtor again and let us know.

Luiz..i just reset the calculator memory pressing clear(on)+left upper menu key +right menu key(as i found at the HP website´s support pages) and the calc began to work well again...thinking now as you said maybe was a electrostatic discharge due to the batteries change, this appears to be a common problem shown by this model because it´s outlined in the manual as well as the procedure you told me..

thanks a lot...
