Why 'metal' labels instead of grabbed serial no.?

#7

Few years ago two HP-41CVs bought from Singapore Factory :

One is a Fullnut () and the other an Halfnut ().
Both according the seller have been used for production test.
I saw that sort of label on one of my previous HP-34Cs.
Thanks for help. Before I put them on ebay.

I heard once a story on that this is happening with certain repairs were the serial number gets lost in the proces, like when the back side had te be replaced. In order to keep track of the serial number was made up on metal.

I had a 41CV repaired by HP once. The complete calculator was replaced, and the serial number of the old calculator was engraved into the replacement unit. I can't see why they'd need to use an adhesive metal label instead.

I just bought a 97s with an aluminum label covering the place which should have the serial number stamped into the plastic. It was made in America in 1978. I have no idea of the significance of the metal.

BTW: Does anyone have an interface pod for a 97s that they can spare?

All the 97S machines seem to have a metal serial number label. The 97S was sold mainly through the test equipment divison. They bought the machines from the calculator division and modified them with the pod and added new front and rear labels.
