You have several options.

1) get N size nicads and use an external charger. You'll need 2 sets, but this option gives you quite high capacity.

2) try to find the nicad pack and the appropriate charger. You could try ebay or the classifieds here. Be warned though, if you buy a secon hand nicad pack you're almost certain to have to have it rebuilt.

3) decide that alkaline cells are easier :-)
