HP48gx to computer connection problem

I have recently experienced an intermittent problem connecting my HP-48gx to my computer. When I run Kermit on the computer I receive an error message '?Warning: unknown hardware for port. Using the Bios as BIOS1'. At this point it becomes impossible to execute a transfer between the two devices. Usually simply re-booting would solve this problem, or on occasion it might be necessary to shut down the computer then turn it on again and reboot. Lately, however, it has become necessary to remove 'com1' from 'system properties, device manager' and then re-install 'com1' by re-booting the computer. After this procedure all is again well. I am using MS-DOS Kermit: 3.15 15 Sept 1997 patch level 0, downloaded from the kermit site. After receiving the above error message, although I can not transfer any files, I am still within Kermit. At this point if I execute 'test com1', another error message is returned, 'Not an 8250 UART at this COM port'. After re-installing the com port, entering Kermit and again executing 'test com1', the response is 'UART tests ok'. So far I have been unable to isolate whatever it is that triggers this error condition.

Does anyone have any idea about what the problem might be? Thank you for your time.

You should use a Windows based Kermit program like Hyperterminal as I did. I am not sure your MSDOS kermit program can support windows.

I have been using this method for over five years, under w95 and now w98. This problem has only recently occured. I don't think hyperterminal or other such programs would work in my situation. I need to execute the transfer program from within a batch file so that it will execute automatically.

It is possible that you may have an IRQ or memory address conflict.
That is usually the case when dealing with serial devices.
1. Ensure that your BIOS is set to "Plug and Play OS"
2. Set the IRQ and memory address for your serial ports to be autodetected and remove all of your serial ports from the system applet of control panel.
3. Reboot and Windows will automatically detect your new settings and reinstall the serial ports.

This problem usually manifests itself when you add a modem or some other piece of internal hardware.
