Hi, i have a newly acquired so i don't know the history. When i reset it, i can see briefly on the screen a picture saying somthing like "POWERED BY ...KERNEL, v 3.00".

When i type VER, which give the CAS version, i can read "HP49 CAS by Parisse, Heiswkanen & Fiechter", and "4.19990729" on the xreg line

Here are my questions :

Is is the standard CAS that HP install on the calc or a third party CAS?

If it's not a HP one, can i use the HP manual to learn the clculator without change?

How can i uninstall that CAS and install the original one?

Is there adevantave of having that CAS insted of the original one?

VPN: It is an advance version of the original 3rd party MetaKernel developed by a small group of ingenius french programmers.

VPN: HP hired these people to form ACO and they integreted the new V3 into the 49 series in less than two years (including other software).

When i type VER, which give the CAS version, i can read "HP49 CAS by Parisse, Heiswkanen & Fiechter", and "4.19990729" on the xreg line

VPN: That's the other software included = Computer Algebra System.

VPN: The people mentioned were also hired by HP (subcontracted) to integrated ALG48 and Erable to a new advanced CAS for the 49 series. 

VPN: It's "Heiskanen" and I know Mika.

VPN: You can not (unless you're are extreme hacker)

Also try the VERSION command.

With a revision 1.18 ROM, the VER command gives me 4.2000031 on level
1, and with a revision 1.19-6 ROM, VER gives me 4.20010912 on level 1,
so I think that your ROM must be an old one.

You ought to upgrade your ROM. Revision 1.18 is the last officially
released by HP; revision 1.19-6 is the latest "beta" revision released
by the developers. Don't let the beta designation put you off; 1.19-6
really is much better than 1.18. It looks to me as if HP management
decided that 1.18 was "good enough", but the developers decided to
continue improvements on their own.

Revision 1.19-6 is available at

revisions can be found at http://www.hpcalc.org/hp49/pc/rom/.

A newer CAS is available, but you'll have to compile it into a new ROM
image yourself. Search at

You'll need connectivity software. In my opinion, Conn4x (Xmodem
based) is the best; get it from

HP page.

But for upgrading the ROM on a 49G, you might need HPComm (Kermit
based), which you can get from
another
HP page.

For manuals, get the 49G "user's guide" and "advanced user's guide";

also good to get information on the system flags, see

As Veli-Pekka mentioned, the 49g+ documentation mostly applies to the
49G as well. The main differences from a user's viewpoint are the
different communications I/O ports and the MMC/SD card capabilty on
the 49g+.

Note that a lot of the information for the 48 series and even the 28
series still applies to the 49 series.

The comp.sys.hp48 newsgroup can be accessed from

is updated only a few times per day, so for active participation it's

You are right, my version with VERSION is 1.10.

I'm no sure to install the 1.19 version; it is written that i will have less "user" memory or something like that if i install this version; what it is really?

You will lose 64KB of user flash memory to the operating system when you upgrade to 1.19-5 or newer, but that still leaves you with 1MB of user flash memory for storing libraries and "backup objects". I doubt that many of us will ever actually fill up the flash memory, and you can always move some things that you don't really need on the calculator to your PC.

Of course, once you have things on the calculator that you don't want to lose, it's wise to back it up to another device like a PC anyway.

Use LeftShift FILES (on the [G] key) to see your current memory situation.

See the "What's New from Release..." notes with the upgrades. I believe that the bug fixes and improved features are well worth losing the 64KB flash bank.
