I have need of a cheap substitute for a 42S. Can the 48GII run any 42S emulator?
Thanks

The cheapest alternative might be a HP48SX + 2 x 128K RAM cards (e.g. Klotz)...

OK, where can I get two 128k cards for the 48GX I have for less than my $100 budget? For the prices I saw on Froogle, even if I could find two 128k cards, together they'd run me as much as a 42S off Ebay. Add to that the fact that I need my 48gx for another application, and I'd need to get a 48sx too, running me to the price of a 42S and a post-PE exam 32SII. So really, can I even get a handheld 42S compatible for <$100? I'd settle for a 49G+ program that allowed the calc to be used for other things too, BTW. ▼

Bill, Quote:From the applications that I have seen at hpcalc.org and other places, it sure seems like a clever person ought to be able to create an application that would mimic the desirable operating features of the 42S and/or other calculators.

The cheapest alternative might be the OLD HP 49G model.

Based on what, Raymond?
The 49G is the *ONLY* HP calculator, which have 128K+128K extra RAM for two emulators (42S, 71B) at the same time while retaining almost full 256KB main RAM. ▼

The 49G is the *ONLY* HP calculator, which have 128K+128K extra RAM for two emulators (42S, 71B) at the same time while retaining almost full 256KB main RAM. Correct. Unfortunatelly, HP-49G+ cannot execute any FULL or EXTENDED versions of my emulators because Port1 is only 128K. I really don't know why HP did this but, in my opinion, that was a very stupid decision. ▼

Why was it a stupid decision? The emulator needs RAM to execute. Also that memory is supposedly usable by native ARM asm programs. Hardly anyone is going to worry about 128kb when they have 700k flash + hundreds of MB on SD.

They just had to do it for the ARM9 to emulate Saturn. I know that. But why did HP put 32K of RAM into HP-33S which obviously cannot make efficient use of such large amount of memory and decided to cut the Port1 on HP-49G+ to 128K? Why didn't they just install another 32K of RAM into HP-49G+ and leave Port1 intact?
Could you kindly import your work to the new 49g+, please! I am still waiting to receive my HP-49G+ (as a gift) and until then I cannot do anything regarding this. And even after I receive it there will probably be many weeks/months until I sorted out all problems and incompatibilities of HP-49G+ - memory configuration, timers, display, serial and IR ports, etc, etc, ... Currently I really don't have much time for this because I must do my regular work. You could use the Main RAM for extra storage (as an option). Port1 has the advantage that it can be configured (mapped) to the address #00000 which is essential for the emulators like HP-41X/42X/71X to work properly because this is the only way to intercept the interrupts (and without interrupts everything is useless). Ports 2 & 3 (SD) don't have this possibility. Of course, I can configure the main calculator RAM to the address #00000 but this is too complicated for everyday use and there is a great chance of 'Memory Clear' with some badly behaving programs running on the emulator. I would have to store the emulator to Port0, then exchange its contents with RAM starting from #80000 (in order to save system memory starting from #80000), then configure RAM to #00000, then run the emulator core ... after exiting the emulator RAM had to be configured back to the #80000 and memory should be exchanged back with Port0 ... What if some program running on the emulator resets the whole system? The memory will be corrupted and everything will be cleared. So, this approach won't work. So far, the best platform for my emulators is HP-48GX with two RAM cards - in the case of >=1024K RAM card in Slot2 all my emulators (including all programs and modules I currently have access to) can be installed without problems. This isn't possible on the 49G/G+. ▼

Yes, maybe the 49G has a good RAM config for some purposes, Maybe HrastProgrammer could provide a version which is able to run from SD card?

I feel the 48GII would make a fairly decent subsitute for the 42s. But I also used a plain 48G instead of a 42s and just wrote a few simple programs and made use of the solver for field work. The 48G worked fine, was expendable, but is probably not nearly as tough as the 48GII probably is (guessing, but it is nearly the same as a 49G+, and that looks pretty durable). The LCD's is the older 48G's Archille's heel and the new LCD lense cures that! Aside from the form factor, I like the 48G series best. I would be happy if Hp re-released the 48G without a graphics LCD and in a thinner, smaller model much like the Hp9G (or even better, a Pioneer case AND Keep the keyboard quality!!!!!). I really like the units conversion, serial port, equations library and the amount of functions. Equip the basic model with 256K RAM and use standard, not propriatory components. I have noticed that my Hp42s is much more thrifty with the RAM than the 48 series ie a similiar program in the 42s seems to use only 60-70% of the RAM that the same type of program uses in a 48/49 series. However, my 32K RAM upgrade is really no big improvement over the original 8 K without any I/O (I would cry, if I loaded 10-20 K of programs and then seen a memory clear, and that can happen on a battery change). I would like to have it with external I/O ports and modules but the basic calculator would be a maxed out 42s type machine. Add any periphials you want (ie like the 41 series via output moduals through a couple standard ports and a speciality ports) 4 standard ports I can name would be a mouse/serial port (give it two), a keyboard port, a USB port and a multi-channel custom port that could accept a VGA low end box. Make this small pioneer able to function as a low end PC/data collection tool if called upon. But the simple to market calculator would be a 42s like calculator with I/0, RAM and some extra goodies in functions (last part can be corrected with RAM) with the potential to do anything. Just my idea of what an ideal calculator should be. ▼

Quote: Before we have I/O for the HP-42S (fortunately there is active work done in this direction!) this will of course be an issue, but still you are able to have both 8K of programs *and* several larger matrices in memory at the same time with the 32K upgrade. Personally I think the 32K upgrade is a great improvement of the HP-42S. What most user's of the HP-33S wish they could do is actually possible on the "HP-42SV": to use the whole memory for programs...
