New TTF files - I'd like to hear from you

#2

Hi, all;

after some "fresh" and "insidious" ideas (some of my own, some based on former observations) I created four new TTF files with CorelDRAW!® 6.0. I prepared a PDF file showing all characters available with these fonts and their respective character codes. You can download the zipped file from here:

New TTF files - zipped

One of the "major" changes is related to the former HP82143A TTF I created and Dave hosts here at the MoHPC. I read some suggestions that I found valuable, and I redraw the characters having in mind that they should look like printed characters instead of dot-matrix charactes. At first I added some "noise" to them, but the file grew too fast after each new character and final results were only visible when characters were enlarged, so I abbandoned the idea.

There are a few "glitches" I'm still working on, but I would like to hear from you prior to release them. If there are any suggestions about characters and their organization (character code), let me know so I can chage them and see the results.

I knosw it's not the same as having the fonts for testing in your own documents, but as soon as I have the gitches fixed and having applicable suggestions applied, I'm posting again.

Hope you like them.

Cheers.

Hi Luiz,

On first impresison I think I prefer the LCD-like characters. I was never too fond of the printer fonts, although I must say your font mimics those almost perfectly.

Anyway, just one data point!

Best,
ÁM.

Hello, Erik;

Thank you for your comments. BTW, I'm sending the CD next week, O.K.?

Best regards.

Thanks for a nice birthday present! (Yes it is today).

Keep up the great work on those fonts, they are all very useful to anyone who wants documents on HP calcs to look authentic, and I am looking forward to you posting the final versions (or send by email).

As you might remember from the past, I am also using your HP-41 display fonts. A complete font of the HP-71B display characters would also be very useful, and did you progress with the font for HP calc keys?

Best wishes from England....

Hello Gordon, guys; are you well? (I did not forget it...)

And (a bit late), happy aniversary! I wish the best.

Thank you (and thanks to Ángel, Erik and all of you who even had a look and found nothing to add about the fonts ;^); I'm glad you like them.

I'm just making the last few corrections (character size for printer output) and I'll post a message with the links for the final TTF files, O.K.? Dave, should I send them to you as well? I'd gladly add another article mentioning these new fonts, or replace the existing one for another, with links to each of all fonts "at once". Any suggestions?

About the HP71 character set: I thought about using the same pattern for the HP42S LCD characters. In fact, I thought about changing a copy of the existing HP42S TTF file and add/replace all necessary characters so it matches the HP71B character set. What do you think? At least, about 60 characters would not be changed, and I'd not have to draw these all again. Anyway, if there is something you believe that must be changed, let me know. Redrawing all characters and create a complete font this way is not as hard as having a complete drawing for each one. I simply create the pattern (a 7×5 square-dot matrix) and I remove the dots not needed. The resulting set is the one I use to create each character for each font.

BTW, Im still in the need of knowing a way to use those "forbiden" positions in TTF fonts. Does anyone know anything about this?

Cheers Gordon, folks!

Your idea of basing a HP-71B font on the 42S file is good, the basic characters do look the same.

Do you need a hi-res scan of the manual char set pages or do you already have a copy?

Hello, Gordon;

thank you so much for you kind offer. I am sure you'll agree with me when I tell you that the HP71B LCD itself is the best source of information. And yes, my friend: I was lucky enough having a very good soul that helped me having a complete unit (HPIL, reader, 2×4K RAM modules... a wonderful machine!). In fact, the basic unit was a "gift", and the "fancy", complete, cosmetically perfect unit was accomplished by trading (an HP42S). I'm a happy owner!

I printed the Owner's Manual available at the MoHPC CD set (I have a former 5CD set) and it's not gonna be hard to change/complete/alter the existing HP42S Character Set TTF, as I have briefly checked already.

There is another TTF I'm willing to draw: the HP75C/D. Mostly because of its natural, unique "italic" look. The only other "place" I've seen such an italic effect is in the HP9x printer: the characters are "italic" as well. I myself do not like them too much, but their "nostalgic" look makes us remember that those wonderful machines were top-of-line, state of the art devices at their time, and they still have their magic. What about that? I'm daring to "twist" a copy the existing HP42S character pattern and see what happens. Again, I'll let you know.

As I have the HP71B TTF I'm telling you.

Once again, thank you for your kind (and much appreciated) offer.

Best regards.
