if hp has stopped using code names i can come up with some for them. how about cold s### and warm s### for thoes last two offerings? i remember saving my nickels and dimes to buy my first 41 in '83. (ive also had an 11, 71, 42, and still have two 48's and a 21). i still use it daily and i count it one of the best purchases i ever made. will anyone say that in 17 years about the madona disco glitter trash hp has marketed lately?

Although not widely known or reported, HP did in fact return to code names just prior to releasing the HP49.
In much the same way as earlier in it's glorious history, the code name represents something about the state of the technology, and the personality of the calculator itself.
In the case of the HP49, the name chosen reflects the cheery and colourful exterior, and also something of the need to squeeze the keys (due to the change in keyboard technology). Also the name refelcts what you find when you get past the difficuly and rather horny exterior (software wise at least), or perhaps it's a reflection of customer comments. (Who really knows?)
Anyway, for the record the Codename of the HP49, a tradition revitalised for this product, was "LEMON"
