about this 16C I got ...

#12

I recently picked up a 16C at a yard sale. Having never owned one, I'm a little perplexed by its behavior. It passes the self tests. But when I turn it on, it comes up with a 0 in the right place but two spaces to the right there's also what looks to be an ``h.'' Here's what it looks like: 0 h. Is there something I need to clear out of memory?
Anyway, in this state, 4 [ent] 4 X = 10 h. Shouldn't it be 16? Have I lost my mind?

#13

I haven't a HP-16C but it is showing that it is in the "hexadecimal" mode (0 h), and 4h * 4h IS 10h (10h is 16 decimal).

To calculate in decimal you'll need to change to decimal pressing "DEC".

It is a "programmers" calculator, not a common scientific one, and it is very valuable!

Best regards,

Nelson

#14

Thanks a whole bunch -- now the d is showing instead of the h and 4x4 = 16.
Even so, I still must be in some wrong mode. For instance, I can only punch in four 8s, then the display won't allow any more. I can punch in five 2s before the same thing happens. And if I punch in four 5s and then hit 5 one more time, the display changes to -09981.
Help!

#15

Hi;

the HP16C is dedicated to "Computer Science", as mentioned by Nelson (hi, Nelson!). I have one of this with the owner's manual.

The fact is that you can use it as a floating-point calculator, but the only "floating point" extra functions (math) you have amongst [+], [-], [÷] and [×] are the reciprocal (1/x) and square root. Most of the functions you see in the keyboard are available in integer mode, that you can choose to be represented in [DEC]imal, [HEX]adecimal, [BIN]ary or [OCT]al. You can have a look at the back of the calculator and you'll have an idea about how to use some of the functions (rotating/shifting, double× and double÷, etc.) and how they affect the carry flag (flag #4) and the overflow flag (with respective "C" (carry flag ON) and "G" (overflow flag ON) annunciators).

If you want to use the HP16C in floating point "mode", locate the FLOAT inscription over the [STO] key and press [f][FLOAT] and the key representing the number of digits you want for decimal places (0 to 9). Depending on what you have in X- and Y-registers, you can see

[0.0000    ]
(if you select 4 decimal places) or anything else, even a
[9.99999 99]
and the "G" annunciator on (overflow). Then you can use the calculator as a regular RPN calculator with the four basic math functions and the extra two mentioned above.

The "strange" -09981 you saw is the 2's complement (maybe 1's complement) representation of a binary number in the current base (decimal?). If you want the unsigned representation (only positive, no negative numbers) find UNSGN over the [3] key and press [f][UNSGN].

You can also select the number of bits you want to work with in integer mode. See the WSIZE over the [RCL] key? This allows you to select the Word SIZE, from 1 to 64 bits (in a time where the most powerful commercial processor was a 32-bit one, the HP16C could handle words 64-bit long; it doesn't mean it has a 64-bit processor, only that it can "handle" number that large). Simply enter the number of bits you wish (according to the current mode: HEX, DEC, OCT or BIN) and press [f][WSIZE].

At any moment you check current status. Find STATUS over the [.] key and press [f][.] (hold the [.] for a while, as you read]. You'll see something like this:

[ 0-16-0000 ]
where:
- the first number (0) indicates the unsigned mode;
- the second number (16) indicates the word size, sown in decimal regardless current integer mode
- and the four zeroes represent the status of the flags from 3 (leftmost) to 0 (rightmost).

There is a whole lot more about the HP16C. This is part of what I can remember without using the owner's manual (there is ISZ/DSZ, memory registers, programming, etc., etc.) but I think it can give you a glimpse of what this little wonder is able to do for you.

Now it's up to you to do something with it. I used to define and test logical design with my HP16C instead of using protoboards and the like. Advantages: no burning IC's, no defective IC to jeopardize the experiment, no extra money to buy components that would be replaced later, if needed, step-by-step "clock" and full local status monitoring... Wow! That was a time when men where men and design and built their own hardware...

I'm a dinosaur <8^(

Cheers.

Luiz

Ferd-
What you are seeing is the 16C wordsize behavior. The 16C is a "Programmers" calculator. Much of it's keys are dedicated to bit # manipulation. The word size can be limited to 0-56 bits, signed or un-signed, 1's or 2's complement.
So limiting the word size to 8 bits means 2 Hex digits (0h-FFh) or a decimal 0-255.
I'd suggest you pick up the manual from the museum CD collection. The price is great because you aren't going to find one anywhere else--you have a genuine CLASSIC--and that means manuals are very rare.

#17

Congratulations, you are a proud owner of one of the most sophisticated calculators ever made. HP16C is (as Nelson said and Luiz explained in great detail) a programmers calculator and not really suitable for general use. You can read a bit more about it on this web site, just look for HP-16C link. You can also get (buy) a manual for it on CD, again from this web site. If you do not need all the fancy integer math it provides for programmers you could sell it either on eBay or post an add on this web site. Depending on the cosmetic condition, you can get big $$$. Mint ones tend to go for over $200.

Also, if you prefer more scientific functionality in a calculator (sin, cos, exp, statistics etc.) and want to have a virtually identical appearance calculator, you can get an HP-11C which is a great little machine. Further, HP-15C is a step forward that adds some matrix functionality, roots and integrals to what HP-11C already has. I personally own all three of these Voyagers and I am having great fun with them.

1234 to delete.

"Ferd" --

The 16C, surprisingly enough, appears to be working properly. You are entering decimal integers, not floating-point numbers (hence, the "d" annunciator).

I was able to exactly replicate the behavior by setting the word size on my own 16C to 16 bits, 2's complement.

Press "f STATUS" on the keyboard. You should see "2-16-####" (#### = 0000 if flags 0-3 are clear).

8888 decimal = 21270 octal = 0,010,001,010,111,000 binary

Entering another 8 would require a larger word size (more bits), so it was refused.

22222 decimal = 53316 octal = 0,101,011,011,001,110 binary

Entering another 2 would require a larger word size (more bits), so it was refused.

55555 decimal = 154403 octal = 1,101,100,100,000,011 binary

With the first bit being a sign bit, the number is interpreted as a 2's-complement negative. (Hence, "-09981")

If the calculator is in good cosmetic shape and fully functional, it is indeed valuable, even without manual. If you want to learn about it, buy a scanned PDF of the manual on the CD-ROM available for purchase at this web site.

If you want to use it as a regular Voyager-series HP calc, do "56 f FLOAT 5" on the keyboard. That will establish a standard 56-bit word and floating-point inputs.

To confirm this change, do "f STATUS" again; you should see "2-56-####" (#### = 0000 to 1111)

#19

Hi, Karl;

just to add that the 56-bit word size is automatically set after a [f][FLOAT] n (0<=n<=9) or [f][FLOAT][.] (scientific); there's no way to select a different word size when the calculator is in floating-point mode. In fact, this is the number of bits used in registers (7 bytes × 8 bits). The 56 you type in before [f][FLOAT] will be considered as the base to compute X-register contents in floating-point mode based on internal HP16C convertion factors.

Cheers.

#20

Hi, Luiz --

... I re-discovered this shortly after posting, and before you posted. Indeed, the 7-byte binary-coded decimal floating-point word is standard for Voyagers (and, I would suppose, all HP calculators with 10-digit displays).

It's a good thing that the word size is automatically set to 56 bits when entering FLOAT. After setting the word size to something very small, the user is not even able to enter a large decimal integer to restore a "large" word size. 8 bits (unsigned) or 9 bits (signed) is required for entering decimal 64, for example.

#21

Hey, Karl;

you made me remember when I first tried my HP16C. I set WSIZE to 1 so I could play (dummy...) 1-bit Boolean operations. Sort of stuff you do when you are "playing with the new toy"... Anyway, the big question: how to get back to larger word size? After a few desperate (and unsuccessfull) attempts, I decided to use the well know solution: [ON]/[-]. I had not even tried FLOATing point numbers, did not read that part of the manual, then. Later, after reading the Owner's Manual a bit more, I found that 0 [f][WSIZE] sets the word size back to 64. What to say? There is no way to "define" logics if you have a "no digit" number... Not even clever, instead essential solution: 0 [f][WSIZE] could return some sort of error, instead it is used to "correct" a dead-end condition.

Those guys knew how to design a calculator. I remember one name: Worseley, if I am not wrong. He was one of the guys working with the HP16C.

I like all Voyagers very much; except for the HP10C I have at least one of each, HP12C Platinum included. BTW, is this last one a Voyager? I think we have the same situation found in the HP67: looks like a classic, but has the "soul" of a Woodstock. What would the Platinum be?

Cheers.

Sell it on E-bay and buy yourself a more conventional calculator. You will get enough $$$$ to buy two or three other Hp calculators ie around $150+. With this I suggest you buy an Hp17bii series or a new Hp33s when they come out. You will pocket $$$ and get a usable calculator for yourself.

Unless you plan to take some computer science courses with lots various types of Comp Sci math, then there is nothing better.
