HP48GX Banned from Exams

Post: #4

Since the ban of the HP48GX by NCEES, does anyone have the number and availability of the new calculator that is being released by HP that will be allowed in the Engineering and Surveying Licensing Examinations?

According to NCEES, the forthcoming HP 33S will be acceptable for use on the engineering and surveying licensing exams. NCEES also states that "Hewlett Packard expects the HP-33s to be available by 12/1/2003":

Expected retail price is $60 to $66. Some unofficial pre-release info about the 33S is available at:

It's hard to believe, but there are *no* RPN scientific calculators in current production that can be used on professional engineering or surveying exams. If you can't wait for the 33S, the only alternative is to find an older discontinued model, like the 32SII, 42S, 15C, or 11C. However, the market value of such models has risen markedly since NCEES banned the HP48 and 49 series.
