Matthias, the problem is that AOL has started blocking large ranges of IP addresses which they feel either are open relays used by spammers or are cable modem or consumer ADSL addresses which should be sending email via their ISP's outgoing mail servers and not directly.

If you are dclient80-218-165-228.hispeed.ch and you are running your own mail server, that's the problem. Like it or not, you are an innocent victim in the fight against spam. Reconfigure your mail server to use the hispeed.ch mail server supplied for you, and all should be well. If it is not, then you should contact both tech support at your ISP and AOL to have the situation resolved.

Best,

--- Les [http://www.lesbell.com.au]

I started getting this about 1 year ago also from AOL when I had my mail server running on my linux server on DSL whenever I tried to email my dad. Even though I had a FQDN. Luckly he finally got rid of AOL.

What I got was "your IP is part of a dialup range of IP adresses and this server does not accept connections from these IPs". There server also directed me to some page with more info about it.

The one thing that got me was that AOL could send mail to my "dialup" server though. So I guess they can spam any server.

Just having a domain name is not enough. AOL has been constructing lists of network address ranges used for consumer-type ADSL and cable modem connections, where people "shouldn't" be sending mail directly but instead through their ISP's outbound SMTP server. If your IP address falls in one of those ranges, rightly or wrongly, AOL will not accept email from you.

Another problem arises when you're legit, on a permanenet IP address, but your ISP doesn't have any way of doing classless in-addr.arpa delegation. Your mail server contacts another and says "HELO mail.chris.org" and the other MTA does a reverse DNS lookup and finds that you seem to be cpe-203-35-202-153.some-isp.net and not mail.chris.org. Some MTA's are configured to reject mail if the HELO string doesn't match the reverse DNS lookup result, and you're hosed again.

If you're on some kind of dial-up or consumer-grade broadband connection, then it's just safer all round to send your outgoing mail via your ISP's mail server. It doesn't cost you any more, and it's a little more reliable.

Best,

I sent Emmanual an e-mail with questions regarding my MLDL from an unknown european source. It was NOT returned 'undeliverable', but I received no reply. Maybe my email was also one that got caught in his e-mail trap. Don

 Dear Don,
Please resend it ASAP. I did not receive it.
Yours.
