Hi, Patrick;
I'd not be surprised if the pins are connected to the card reader. I cannot see how many pins are available at the cable end (barely shown) but this would be the easiest way to load and retrieve programs to/from an external source: through the reader's circuits.
I remember when working as a telecom technitian whe a computer was connected to an ESK 10000 command unit (Siemens Switching Network) in order to automate the "analog" equipment. A complete daugtherboard was needed to convert computer data into comands and vice-versa.
Have anyone heard about such possibility? The HP97S has a specially developed data collector, I know, but I wonder if using card reader's input/output would also be possible.
Just a 1ยข "guess".

It is almost certainly an interface to an external printer or a reader for the blind. There were a couple of articles printed at the time talking about these interfaces.
