Programmables Available Today?

#34

Was at a calculator history site recently and read an article where the author pointed out that there were diminishly few programmable calculators on offer at a retail level today.

I can only think of the 12C, 12CP, 48GX, all from HP! Is the 49 still being sold? Can't think of any programmables from TI, although I don't know their line anywhere near as well as I did in the mid-late 70's!

I always thought that TI's top of the line programmables were very nice machines. Not in the same league as our beloved HP's, but nice nonetheless (am I allowed to say that here? ;-). But, they don't make them anymore, either, eh?

It will be interesting to see if any of the new HP calculators promised for introduction in 2003 will be programmable. I expect not. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them have a SOLVER, though.

Hi Patrick, guys;

I'm a teacher and sometimes I face the hard task of answering the question: "Why do we have to learn how to program?"

I sometimes take a big breath and try to explain not the need itself, but the fact that everytime one explains something to someone else he/she is, in fact, programming the other in a way he/she will be able to perform that particular task somehow. When we know how to do something it does not mean we are also able to expand this ability to someone else, as we see many people saying: "I know how to do it, but do not ask me to tell you how do I do it!".

Communication and programming, at a human level, are too close that sometimes they are the same. When you get to know a Computer Scientist you are, in fact, knowing someone that should be able to "communicate" with a machine by means of "programming" it. And the "programming" level we have today for computer languages goes beyond computer abilities by itself. If we look straight at what one can do with a computer when programming in PASCAL or C, we will be able to actually understand what the computer can do. But if we look at what can be done when A.I., Neural Networks, Fuzzy, Object Oriented and related "tools and environments" are used, we go beyond the understanding of the computer; we are, in fact, looking at the programmer instead the machine.

When I bought my HP41 in the 80's, personal computers (Sinclair, Apple and a few others) needed to be programmed to do what the calculator was able to as a plain tool. Almost every math tool was ready-to-use, and whatelse was needed could be, in many cases, programmed in time.

Computers had their magic moment when high definition graphics and higher level programming languages became available and calculators, that once were at the desktop, are now deeply hidden inside the drawer. And desktop computers are there, now.

Programmers? What do you need to program in your calculator so far? I know how to program in almost all programmable HP calculators (I did not stop to create "programs" in the HP17BII/19BII... yet), some TI, but I was not able to program in those BASIC-related CASIO, SHARP and others. I also never had an HP71 in hands and I know it is BASIC-programming and has an RPN-like calc mode.

I think the problem is not a lack of programmable calculators; instead, it's a lack of programmers. In fact, except for people like most contributors in here, that I believe take programming as a lot more than a cause-and-effect procedure, a few others will see programming as gray matters, reasoning, mind development, amongst other advantages, but never a mind threatening activity.

I hope that not only HP offer programmable calculators, but I also that we find enough reasons to use their programming capabilities to do something useful.

My thoughts, though. Comments, suggestions, critics, add-ons accepted and welcome.

Are there people interested in Programmables?

I am :-)

#37

Luiz,

Your eloquence on this subject is very beautifuly expressed.

Hi, Trent;

in spite of some grammatical sin, I believe I could mention most of what I wanted. I think this particular subject is teasing, and I added this other post mostly as a practical example.

I'm glad "I made it"!

Thank you again. It's encouraging.

My first computer program was writing an iterative routine in BASIC on an Open University mainframe to find the value of e.

Very soon the function e^x was available in most scientific calculators and in BASIC so the need disappeared. Programming moved on to a higher level.

Today the need for the level of programmability in 1980's pocket calculators has disappeared because the tasks that they were used for can be performed with a few simple steps in a spreadsheet, which is quicker, easier to learn, gives the ability to plot results, store the "program" and the results, email it to almost anyone else in the world and they will be able to read, understand, repeat and modify that "program" with very little effort or additional training. Try that with a 49G!

Arificial Intelligence will gradually replace the need to type in formulae to a spreadsheet, or input at low level to an application such as Mathematica.

All of this progress is made by having the low level algorithms required to solve our problems programmed in to a machine for us by people in software companies, anf higher levels of useability added to remove us from needing to see the low level problems.

Unfortunately I fear that pupils in school are in danger of never understanding what is happening inside the machines they use because they perform tasks for them so easily. Of course the benefits are that the newer generations will be able to concentrate on higher level tasks, predicting earthquakes or weather patterns, without ever needing to know how to calculate the value of e, or write an algorithm for Runge-Kutta integration. But if they had to do these low level tasks they would not find time for the high level ones.

It is our teachers, such as Luiz, who will have to continue to find the right balance between the low level and higher level learning which will allow progress to continue WITH understanding of the processes involved; this is not going to be an easy task!

Besides the do nothing "add 1, pause, goto add" routines on my friend's TI SR-56, my first programs were for the SR-52.

Tried doing a 3x3 matrix determinant. Since each memory reference took THREE program step locations (STO, 0, 0) this was a pain.

Then I wrote a version of a space war game for the SR-52. Never got very far. :-)

BASIC? In 1980, had to write a payroll program.

Assembly? PDP-11 Had to write a program to echo characters typed on a terminal to a line printer.

HP-41? My real "new" programs I have written include Yahtzee and Skunk.

>Tried doing a 3x3 matrix determinant. Since each memory reference took THREE program step locations (STO, 0, 0) this was a pain.

Not only that, but you only saw zeroes while keying in the program. I never understood why TI made its programmables that way. It's like driving a car without being able to see.

On the other hand, Gordon, I do not sadden because kids can't multiply 6 by 7 without counting with fingers or pressing 6 [ENTER] 7 {x}. There has to come a time when we have to bypass parts of what was known as "knowledge" by an earlier generation.

Most forum users here use some kind of solver when they need to solve equations. Would anyone think less of them because they never learned (or have forgotten) how to use matrices and calculate determinants to solve simultaneous equations?

Or, going to a lower level, who cares today to learn how to extract a square (or cube!) root manually. I learned both in my younger days, and I'll be damned if I can remember any of it today. All I remember is how slow, tedious, error-prone, and inefficient it was.

Just my 2 cents.

-Ernie

#43

Hi, Ernie;

I'd be dammed, too, if I have to do it all the time, but I normally show how to extract a square root step by step to my students everytime I teach math classes, then I ask them to use their calculators and perform the same operation with a single keystroke. This way, they'll understand what's going on.

You may be sure that some of them will ask: "Does it all happen inside the calculator? How come?", and then it's time to talk about algorithms, Series, etc. See? At least it's a good bait. And when you show them you know how to perform that set of complex operations and that that same set of operations is also performed by a single keystroke, it looks magic. I remember one day a student asked me how to compute sine. I took the remaining time to tell about series and to perform a single sin(PI/4) with about five or six terms only. I had to ask for help computing factorial and division, and ask them to use their calculators. They felt impressed with the hole process and some of them took note and tried later with other values, just for curiosity.

Just let them curious and they will be caught.

My 2¢.

Yes, except that what they did on paper is not the same algorithm the calculator uses. It's good for a bait, and interesting as curiosity, but no one in his or her right mind would take the time to take a square root on paper and pencil -- today.

Think of this, too. When I was a kid I learned how to perform addition, subtraction, and multiplication (not division) using _Roman_ numerals. It's an incredibly complicated process, but it intrigued me. Just the same, I wouldn't use Roman numerals for computation when Arabic are available. Further, I wouldn't use paper and pencil if a calculator was at hand.

Especially if it's an RPN one. 8^)

#45

You need to read the next sentence to the one which you quoted to see my main point; it is the release from the low level tasks which will allow future generations to do more complex things. But that does not mean that lower level understanding is not still important, and Luiz seems to do well at gaining pupils' interest in learning some of those.

The overall point is that us 80's calculator lovers are pandering to nostalgia, but we enjoy it!

The enduring features of the older calculators (and test equipment) which HP need to recognise as important are the quality and useability, they badly need to learn how to maintin these attributes in their new products.

#46

re: "Unfortunately I fear that pupils in school are in danger of never understanding what is happening inside the machines they use because they perform tasks for them so

They are also liable to have a pretty poor understanding of whatever functions they are evaluating. I teach intro college physics, and am amazed every semester at the almost complete lack of understanding my students have of the Sin/Cos/Tan functions. Oh sure, some (!) of them know the basic definitions (opposite over adjacent, etc.), and they can all pretty much punch the buttons on their (sigh, non-HP) calculators. But ask them the value of cos(0), or sin(45), or tan(45), or sin(90) and you get a room full of blank stares. Makes it hard to get them to have a feel for the limiting behavior of various problems!

#47

Hi, Dave;

I think we are facing a plague! My students at least start attending classes with me like this, and some of them seem to be cured at the end of the semester. Later, when needing that knowledge, it's simply vanished from their (?) heads. <8^O

As human beings, it's our duty to take necessary meajures to extinguish this plage! Extreme meajures, if needed! B^(

Now I understand why using RPN is so hard for most of them... :(

Luiz C. Vieira - Brazil

#48

Your right! And there is no substitute for making them draw out the functions on paper BY HAND and look at some of the main values. A pencil on a wheel and pulling a piece of paper past it wa instruvtive to me when I was learning these things...

#49

Well, at the risk of sounding like a dinosaur, I think that yes, Virginia there is a need for a programmable calculator. However I would like to add one more point: a programmable does not always need to do high end graphing and graphics (a la 48G series). I have seen some of the applications that the new HP's can do and yes, I am impressed. Do I program? No. I am an engineer, and I would like a programmable (RPN PLEASE!) to remember my "macro" strokes. Something like my 41. I don't need high end calculations, I need something semi-portable. Oh sure, I can use a PDA, but then I have the interface in the way.

Just a number cruncher. That's all I want. Programmable but not with graphics. Black, so's I can use it in the boardroom or the field. Good documentation, so's I can figger the darn thing out and not have to have the book at my side when I want to do a little more advanced calculation. (Imagine if HP brought out a 41/42 "classic" series - wishing....)

#50

Jim…

My sentiments exactly. What I want is EVERYTHING in a 41CX + Advantage ROM + EVERYTHING in a 42S + the ability to handle unit analysis. I also want full I/O capabilities and communication with my PC, lots of memory, a high speed processor, etc. Finally, I want the old HP quality and I would pay a lot of money for such a machine…like $500 perhaps. I still program my calculators as part of my work as a civil engineer, and plan to continue. (As an example, see the listing of HP-41 programs for a Feet-Inches-Fraction program I wrote.)

I have a 48G+ that I rarely use. It's not as easy or as convenient as my 42S, nor as powerful as my PC. I find that a graphing calculator is not very useful except as something to play with. I can graph faster and better in Excel or Mathcad.

The way I see it, if my 42S dies and I can't find another to replace it, I may just have to retire. 8-)

Fred

#51

I can understand your feelings about the 48, between the 42 and the PC... but I don't agree.
My feeling is that the 42 is between the 15C and my 48GX... so I didn't use it and I'm going to send it to a good friend.

I feel very confortable with my highly customized 48GX and it is much smaller than my PC and when I need a "pure" calculator I am in love with the 15C...

Raul

#52

Raul…

I know the 15C is very popular and the perfect calculator for many people. I have a non-working 34C that I loved and might have migrated to the 15C if not for the 41CX and 42S. My main objection to the 15C is the horizontal format, which I never cared for…I use a calculator in the hand often enough to prefer the vertical format.

This is not to disparage the 15C and its bretheren. I just never had a need for it.

Fred

#53

TI sells programmables that are also graphing calculators. In fact, they keep selling the same models plus enhancements, like the 83, 83+, 83+SE. I have the 81 and 83+SE. I understand their top end (94?) is quite advanced in terms of math and also contains a 68000 - not new but powerful.

#54

Interestingly, TI have recently revamped their top-of-the-line TI-92+ to a HORIZONTAL format calculator. The screen is on the upper left, and numeric pad on the right side.

They call it the "Voyage 200"...

Odd choice of name, I thought.

;-)

#55

Um, the TI-92 has ALWAYS been horizontal...(I have one right here). The Voyager looks like the same things, slightly smaller.

#56

I do software for a living.

Years ago even our text editors where programmable, like EDT for the DEC systems. When a repetitive operation was required, I would program a key to do it and the edit would be complete it seconds. Now, with the wonders of GUI editors, I have to repeat the same operation hundreds of times with my fingers (or suffer Perl).

We also have had to substitute spreadsheets for even simple operations. Sometimes this paradigm works. Sometimes I just need a real calculator, but I rarely have had the need to program my many calculators. Were in the physical sciences, this might be different. The 41 was the best programmable, but I have come to like Basic for this sort of thing, not Visual Basic, but clean and simple 71 and 75 style basic.

#57

The HP-49G is still available at some places. I didn't get around to buying one until about a month ago (i.e., April 2003). I got mine from http://www.samsoncables.com.

As for programmable calculators from Texas Instruments, the TI-Voyage200 came out in the fall of 2002 as a replacement for the TI-92/92+. The TI-86 is still available, as is the TI-89. (The TI-89 is essentially a TI-92 in a TI-86 case.) The TI-83 is still available as well, including a new variant with much more memory than the standard model.

All of these TI models are programmable in a dialect of BASIC. The TI-89/92/92+/Voyage200 use a newer dialect that includes upper & lowercase characters and more readable language constructs (e.g., if...endIF instead of if...end). The TI-83 dialect is compatible with the TI-86 and largely compatible with the long discontinued TI-85. (The TI-83 includes functions not present in the old TI-85.) However, the TI-85 & TI-86 include instructions in their BASIC that are not present in the TI-83 version (e.g., mod). (A situation somewhat analogous to an HP32SII relative to an HP42S or the HP41 series.)

Unless HP reverses itself on the termination of its professional calculator line, Texas Instruments will have the only current production programmable scientific calculators with any power. That would be a tragedy! Let's see an improved HP49G with at least 2x the speed of the old 49G!

#58

Hey, Mark, thanks for that.

While the discussion in this thread has been fascinating to me (isn't serendipity great?), your message contains the information I originally sought!

There doesn't seem to be a web site that has the information about detailed machine features for TI's that we have here for HP's. I know about datamath.org but you can't tell, for example, whether a calculator has, say, an x<y? test or a DSE or an index register or what have you.

Maybe there is one out there I haven't found yet, but it is nevertheless a testament to our curator's great work how easy this information is to find for so many models of HP.

#59

Quote:

Better yet, let's see the 49G software built into the body of a 48GX. (I'll *never* buy a 49 as long they keep the current hardware and color scheme.)

#60

I'm not positive, but I think maybe if you put MetaKernal in a GX you might have what you are looking for. I think to do it requires adding a RAM card to hold it, so it would be an expensive way to go. Apparently MetaKernal was available as a ROM card but some kind of licensing problems make that not available.

#61

Actually, that's what I've done: I have a 128K card with MetaKernel and a 2MB card with Erable and Alg48 and a bunch of other stuff. It gives me most of the functionality of a 49G (which is based on those three packages), but there are some inconveniences. Erable only works in ports 0 or 1, and MetaKernel fills port 1, so I have to move Erable to port 0 when I use it. That nearly fills port 0, so I frequently have to move it to another port (on the 2MB card) when I want to use port 0 for other things. Fortunately, MetaKernel's Filer makes it very easy to move and copy things around from port to port.

The 49G has all the software components much better integrated and there's some added functionality as well, and there's much less problem with running out of memory. However, the 49G's lousy keyboard, the lack of IR port and expansion slots, and the shape & color of the case are so disagreeable to me that I'd rather stick with my 48GX.

#62

I'm using a 48GX + 128kb + 1Mb with Metakernel, Erable, Alg48 and many other sofware... All this is *perfectly* integrated with my own Menu System from wich I can access any ROM or RAM command.
Probably (sure) I will buy a new 15C or a 32S Platinum, but it will be very very very difficult substitute my 48GX Super

#63

do you know if there's some way to romify this or the equivalent?

when the 49 came out, i reasoned i'd better buy a 48GX real quick before they stopped making them. basically because its a much nicer built machine and that matters for me. i added in erable, alg48 and that java (not web java) stack replacment thing that lets you scroll fast and everything.

like this its great, until it crashes and you lose it all.

#64

What do you mean with romify? (excuse my english)
Do you mean to protect your installed prgs against memory deleting if calcualtor crahes?
I have all libraries instaled in ports>0. Also a Home backup. Those ports are (almost) secure.

Please tell me if I understood your question...

Raul

#65

thanks for the info. i hadnt realised that ports other than 0 are a lot more secure.

#66

also, sharp and casio have some nice units out there. the casio 4800p isnt that bad and the sharp el-9900 programs in basic.
