A poll for 48 users/owners

#19

After typing my raving response to Norm's 48G+ thread, I would like to hear other peoples' answers to these questions:

1. What percentage of the features of your hp48G would you guess that you use?

2. Are you satisfied with that? Please explain briefly.

3. Are you glad you bought it, or do you feel ripped off?

4. If you could only have ONE calculator, and you had to choose between one of those listed below, which would it be?

a. TI-85
b. hp 48G/GX/G+ (whichever...)
c. hp 34C (hehehe)
d. hp 32SII
e. hp 20s
f. TI-89

5. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, what overall score would you give the HP48G/GX/G+ ?

6. If you had to pick one thing about the 48 series as its main downfall, what would it be?

a. Slow processor
b. Unintuitive design (too hard to figure out)
c. Poorly designed, from the standpoint of user-friendliness
d. Poorly designed, from an ergonomic standpoint
e. Other (explain in one sentence or less)

Thanks for your input. If anyone's interested, I might add up the results after a few days' time.

1. Use less than 5% of features. (Only used one for 2 months)
2. This is just fine. I don't want to add too much "overhead" to the calculation process--the tool is supposed to speed up work, not make more!
3. Glad I bought it. It is extremely useful for weight-moment calculations (because of the Array feature--called "LIST" math).
4. 32SII. The display is MUCH better in low light. It does everything a calculator MUST do. And you didn't disallow having a computer. (I have used 32sII as ONLY calc, until recently, for about 7 years).
5. 7
6. b.

hrm. I'm going to have to comment on some of this, but:

1: hard to say. Probably 30-40% if you count all the programming exrcises and functions used in various libraries i have downloaded. (actually, counting IR/modules/serial/downloads... it might be more like 60%. I really don't know. Without any IO or downloads, 10%. but I wouldn't use it without them)

2: I am fairly satisfied. I have some areas I would like to see things having been done differently, but overall it's a fantqastic machine in its format

3: I have..... 6. I don't feel ripped off (9 if you count 28c/s machines)

4: among the ones listed ? 48SX. or GX. I don't know how your list qualifies, ther. Conspicuosly not on your list, but quite relevant- 41C/V/X and 42S The 42S is much preferreed over the 32, and would be very nearly my first choice for a one-calc-for-life machine. The 41CX might win out because of IO. maybe.

I think this is very relevant as the 48 is really more of a post-41 machine than a post-34 machine. The 42S or 32S(ii) wold be more reasonable for that definition.

5: assuming somethng like windows CE screentap only idiot calc as a 1, and my dream machines (42SX and 48/71 combo) as 10s..... 7.

6: the main thing missing is a 48 version with a horzontal format and proper keyboard (200LX style, but keeping the <- -> shifts)

I don't think the cpu is all that slow. it's still quite usable in performance for very complex math more thana *decade* later.

I don't think the design was bad at all- within the constraints of the package. the UI could have been done differently, but it's not really all that bad once you are used to it. Better docco would have made a huged difference, and did- when I went and found/bought some.

I think it is still a very viable machine for developmental revisions- but those revisions would have to start with no less than a 16mhz cpu, competitive graphics design, and CF replacing the existing expansion slots.

OK, I'll explain it in less than one sentence:

1. Hard to say. May be 30%? I use most features except the symbolic and not so much graphing.
2. I am very satified with the calculator. It's not perfect but RPL is an improvement over RPN in my opinion. Unit conversion is convienient. The Solver is nice. Good programming capabilities.
3. Yes I am glad I bought them (48sx and 48gx) and both at $260 each. I think they are worth their price.
4. The 48 (may be GX as it has better screen). Second is the 41. I have owned and used the TI85,HP34C,HP32SII,HP20S and I don't think any of them are that great.
5. I give it an 8. It can be better.
6. For the SX it's the low contrast screen. For GX it's the key board and label colors.

#24

I had a 48GX, couldn't stand it or RPL so I gave it to my nephew, and he loves it. I own one Woodstock, one Classic, three Voyagers, and two Pioneers. Also didn't care for the 31E (it woke up with four decimals), so I gave it to my son. To each his own!

I love the discussion.

1. Maybe 5-10% of the features.

2. I'm not satisfied only using that much of it, but I've only owned it for 4 months and haven't spent much time working with it.

3. Yes, I'm glad I have it. I bought it at clearance discount, and I am glad I could save a few dollars. At the moment, I don't *need* it because my 32SII meets my requirements, but I am interested in experimenting with it and programming it. That's why I bought it.

4. (d) HP32SII -- I own a TI-86, HP32SII, HP48GX, and HP20S. My preference is an RPN Scientific that fits in my shirt pocket.

5. Maybe an 8? That may vary as I use it more.

6. Other: Cost of accessories -- I would probably buy a memory card if it's wasn't so expensive (although when I need the extra memory, I might find the cost worth it).

I found some features were intuitive, I quickly picked up others after reading the maunal -- user-friendly and beginner-friendly are not the same thing. I find it user-friendly after spending some time becoming familiar with it.

Really, I can't complain -- I knew what I was buying when I purchased it, and it met my expectations.

Thanks.

#26

1. Probably around 5%

2. Not really. It's a waste, frankly.

3. I didn't buy it - it was a gift from my family. I feel guilty that I don't appreciate it as much as I feel I should.

4. You omitted the 41C{V,X} from that list. I have two of those and am very glad of them.

5. Around a 5.

6. Lousy documentation. I'd expect such a complex beast to have a long learning curve, but not such a steep one. The annoying thing is that earlier RPL calcs had much better documentation, and going over the 28 manual on the Museum DVD ROM has clarified some things about the 48GX.

Even after that, though, I still see a huge jumble of commands and functions and not much unifying elegance. . .

Best,

Agreed. As you have the musem DVD, also see the 48SX Owner's Manual and
Programmer's Reference Manual.

1. What percentage of the features of your hp48G would you guess that you use? 5%, if that much, of my 1993 48G. The unit conversions and equation library are handy.

2. Are you satisfied with that? Please explain briefly. Sure; I've got others that are easier to use: 15C, 32Sii, 20S, 42S, 41CV, 34C. I also have the RPL 28C and 49G, and the specialized 12C, 17Bii, and 16C.

3. Are you glad you bought it, or do you feel ripped off? Yes, glad. At $55 + $20 later for a manual, it's not a bad value.

4. If you could only have ONE calculator, and you had to choose between one of those listed below, which would it be?

a. TI-85 b. hp 48G/GX/G+ (whichever...) c. hp 34C (hehehe) d. hp 32SII e. hp 20s f. TI-89 32Sii -- easy to use, fast, legible LCD, does almost everything one would need in a handheld calc.

5. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, what overall score would you give the HP48G/GX/G+ ? As a handheld calc, a "3". It's just too arcane and unintuitive.

6. If you had to pick one thing about the 48 series as its main downfall, what would it be? b., mostly.

a. Slow processor b. Unintuitive design (too hard to figure out) c. Poorly designed, from the standpoint of user-friendliness d. Poorly designed, from an ergonomic standpoint e. Other (explain in one sentence or less)

1. What percentage of the features of your hp48G would you guess that you use?

Impossible to say: I use most of the programs installed (third party and my own) and many of the 48 normal scientific features

2. Are you satisfied with that? Please explain briefly.

YES: I use what I need ("living" on ROM or on RAM)

3. Are you glad you bought it, or do you feel ripped off?

This machine amaze me everyday: the best of the 48 is that it is MY 48, different of the others, because the progs and the really very high customisation

4. If you could only have ONE calculator, and you had to choose between one of those listed below, which would it be?

The 48GX (I have the 32SII, the 42S and the 15C)

5. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, what overall score would you give the HP48G/GX/G+ ?

9

6. If you had to pick one thing about the 48 series as its main downfall, what would it be?

The slooow firmware (just install MetaKernel and the 48 is MUCH better)

#30

1.) Maybe 25% if you include all the commands used for RPL-programming. Maybe 8.375% if only mathematical functions count.

2.) I think that is ok. I don't need all functions, but I am glad to know they are available if I need them. Also I had much fun with this calculator (programming, games, IR-remote-control...)

3.) When I bought it, my first GX costed about 220 Euro/$. That was a lot of money for a student, but It was really ok. I _wanted_ the HP48!

4.) It would be the HP48GX. Other calcs are faster for small calculations (I like the 32SII). But they lack some advanced functions. The HP-49G has even more functions, but I don't need them (and don't find them without a manual at hand). I like the older HPs very much, i.e. the voyagers or spice series. But they would not fit as my _only_ calculator.

5.) I would rate it 8.

6.) definitely "a". If it was faster, it was the perfect machine for me.

Holger

PS: The results would interest me!

#31

The HP-49G has even more functions, but I don't need them

and if you should need them, just install MetaKernel, Alg48 and Erable in your 48. You'd get 95% of the 49...

My answers will refer to a 48SX with 'Equation Library', 'Math Pac' and my own custom programs. (I bought a 41CX when it was introduced and the 48SX when that came.)

(1) Possibly around 5%, and that is probably a lot? (2) Yes. Satisfies my needs. (3) Still happy with it. (4) It would be the 48SX, although I don't know that many to compare with. (5) For my needs, a 10. (6) I wish that programming was more 'intuitive', like on the 41.

PS I find the 48SX documentation to be excellent.

#33

I've just bought Norm's 48G+, so I'll let you know in a few months!

#34

1. What percentage of the features of your hp48G would you guess that you use?

5-10%

2. Are you satisfied with that? Please explain briefly.

No - further use requires alot of learning / memorising

3. Are you glad you bought it, or do you feel ripped off?

No - but not ripped off

4. If you could only have ONE calculator, and you had to choose between one of those listed below, which would it be?

a. TI-85 b. hp 48G/GX/G+ (whichever...) c. hp 34C (hehehe) d. hp 32SII e. hp 20s f. TI-89

d but I was sorely tempted to say 'none of the above' because you havn't listed the 41 or 42.

5. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, what overall score would you give the HP48G/GX/G+ ?

5 - but only because of the build quality and half decent manual

6. If you had to pick one thing about the 48 series as its main downfall, what would it be?

A different level of calculator to what I need - the late RPN models were just about right.

#35

1. 20% or so.

2. Yes, I'm satisfied. I've only had it a short time, percentage will eventually go up.

3. Glad I bought it. It's a helluva fun toy.

4. d. 32SII -- long battery life rules out 34C, pocketability rules out 48.

5. 7.

6. e -- too big to fit in a shirt pocket. (Perhaps this falls under "d" instead.)

1. What percentage of the features of your hp48G would you guess that
you use?

HP 48GX, actually. I won't even hazard a guess. Certainly all program
structures and stack manipulation commands. But for mathematics, my use
is pretty much for basic arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, coordinate
system transformations, and statistics. Some use of string commands,
mostly for labeling printouts and such. I seldom use the graphing
features, but it's nice to have them available when I want them. And I
play around with it a lot, just to experiment with what can be done.

2. Are you satisfied with that? Please explain briefly.

Sure. What more would I want a calculator to do? And if it can do even
more than I know how to use, so what? It doesn't reduce what I can do
with the calculator.

3. Are you glad you bought it, or do you feel ripped off?

I bought it back around 1994 (at maybe about US$275?), and I certainly
didn't feel "ripped off", if I understand that term correctly. I did
choose to spend my money, and the 48GX is at least as good as I'd read.
But I was slightly disappointed; not that there's any problem with it,
but it isn't as much of an improvement over the 48SX as the 48SX is over
the 28S. But now that they're available at bargain basement prices on
eBay, I have two spares, and if I weren't so short of money I'd buy more
while they're cheap.

4. If you could only have ONE calculator, and you had to choose between
one of those listed below, which would it be?

a. TI-85 b. hp 48G/GX/G+ (whichever...) c. hp 34C (hehehe) d. hp 32SII
e. hp 20s f. TI-89

b: 48GX

5. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, what overall score would
you give the HP48G/GX/G+ ?

Do you mean as compared to any other calculator currently available? If
so, then 10.

6. If you had to pick one thing about the 48 series as its main
downfall, what would it be?

a. Slow processor b. Unintuitive design (too hard to figure out) c.
Poorly designed, from the standpoint of user-friendliness d. Poorly
designed, from an ergonomic standpoint e. Other (explain in one sentence
or less)

e: It's too big to fit in my shirt pocket.

James
