I am currently on my high school calculator applications team and I was given a HP 32SII calculator but it was different than our other ones. It had the exact same keys but the colors of the wording on it were purple and green. I lost it over the summer and my teacher told me that HP only made it for one year and it was worth over $400. I find that hard to believe. Could anyone please tell me if that is true? If it isn't, what is the real value? Thanks for any kind of help.

Hi, Ashley. In fact, HP kept producing the HP32S for three years and the HP32SII for more than ten years. And the US$400,00 price was reached when the HP32SII stopped being produced, an artificial, collector's raised price. Average price during the last year of production was around US$60,00. (the lower I saw for a new machine was US$39.90) Purple and cyan letters and corresponding shift-keys colors were added in the last series, same functionality instead. The only difference was the country were it was produced: Indonesia. It is also referred to as "silver-bezel type. Many users also complain for the quality and key-feeling. I did not use it yet, but I believe it's true, based in other Indonesian models I have. The HP32S, a predecessor, was produced from 1988 to 1991. The HP32SII was introduced in 1991 and ceased production in 2002. Hope this helps. Best regards. Luiz C. Vieira (Brazil)

Look on eBay (especially "Completed Items") for recent actual prices of HP-32SII's. I doubt many (if any) have gone for $400.00 . THe value of a mass-produced item is generally what it takes to replace it, and I think you should be able to replace a 32SII for much less than $400. I should think that the colors on the keypad don't affect the calculator's utilty for high school math. If your teacher is fixated on $400, I've got a near-mint unit I'll gladly part with for that price . . .

The machines with the purple and green keys were later production models. It is generally agreed that they were of much poorer quality compared to earlier ones. ▼

I've got a recent HP32Sii, with green and white colours (made in Indonesia). I'm not sure if this is the same as previous references. I can confirm that the keyboard quality is horrific. I believe this has been mentioned before, 'sticky keys' etc. I used to have an HP-35, but lost it a while ago. The keyboar d was _much_ better. |
