ARCL ST X on -42S

#10

After much hair-pulling and screeching, I've finally given up on trying to key in ARCL ST X for the Resistor Value program. ARCL seems to have no such parameter as ST X.........assistance would be excruciatingly welcome!

on an HP-41C you would type [ALPHA] [SHIFT] [RCL] [.] [6]

... and of course another [ALPHA] at the end to close the sequence.

That's the easy way!

If more complexity is desired: :-)

CATALOG

FCN

down arrow

down arrow

ARCL

.

ST X

The end result in a program is a line of code like:

## ARCL ST X

I suppose what isn't obvious to one not familiar with HP-41C/42S keystroke programming is the need for "." (period) after ARCL to allow selection the desired stack register.

I recommend reading the manual - on p. 133 it is stating exactly that a [.] is required before a stack register can be called.

I think that the tendency when entering this line on an HP 42S is that when the ARCL _ _ is shown, there appears for selection the variables existing on the calculator. It would be tempting to expect that in addition to the variable list, a list of the stack registers should appear. One must know somehow that the list of stack registers does not appear until the magic "." is pushed. There's nothing obvious about that, if one hasn't some prior familiarity with the 41C/42S.

As you stated, Walter, the manual explains this. But it's more fun to ignore the documentation for first attempts. :-)

Anyone who does not ignore the documentation after getting a new device is not a normal person! (Unless he has just received his first chainsaw or W88 nuclear warhead.) :-)
