HP 50g - select characters on the stack, copy/paste

#2

I'm not having luck finding anything searching or in the manual. Is there a way to copy a portion of something in one level of the stack and paste it back in by itself?

For example, if I solve an equation with linsolve, and the result is placed on the stack as 1: [x=-(5y)] I'm looking to copy the result -(5y) and work with it, without having to type it in myself. Especially when the answers are much longer with many decimal points I want to retain for accuracy. Surely I have just missed something, I see the copy cut paste keys, but I don't understand how to highlight the characters I want to pull out of a result?

You can only copy parts of expressions when they are on the edit line, not when they are on the stack.

Therefore, to copy part of a history item, do this: highlight it, press Enter (which will copy the whole thing to the edit line), then edit it there. If it's too large to simply delete the unwanted parts once it's in the edit line, you can press Shift View (Copy), and use the menu buttons to mark parts to either copy or cut.

Hope that helps!

Thanks, pressing the up arrow, then the echo soft menu button puts the value on the edit line and allows me to at least strip out what I'm after.

I guess I'm not understanding how to mark parts of text/numbers to copy though.

1. While editing anything, press Shift View (Copy). This displays the Copy menu.

2. Place the cursor at the beginning of what you want to copy (or cut), and tap the Begin button.

3. Place the cursor at the end of what you want to copy, and tap End.

4. Everything between the Begin and End is now selected.

5. Tap either Cut (which deletes the selection and puts it in the clipboard) or Copy (which puts it in the clipboard without deleting it).

6. To put the entire edit line in the clipboard, tap All Copy.

This way you can make either the edit line or the clipboard contain what you need. The contents of the clipboard can be pasted (Shift Menu) anywhere in any edit line.

If that's not what you're looking for, just holler.

Thanks, I see now how to use begin and end to select text/numbers, this is exactly what I was after.

A question though, I am not understanding what you mean by pressing "Shift View (Copy)" to display a copy menu. On my 50g, the copy command is right shift VAR, but I never do see a menu when pressed, what am I missing here?

This explanation relates to the HP Prime, where Copy resides under View, and behaves like described. Unfortunately, not helpful in the HP50g context. :-)

Oops, my mistake! I have Prime on the brain, and didn't notice the posting title. Sorry!

As you already discovered, the 50g doesn't need a "Copy menu". It has BEGIN, END, COPY, CUT, and PASTE right on the keyboard. However, if you press TOOL while editing, you get a menu with 3 pages of useful editing tools.

Ah, thanks for the clarification.
