Prime screen scratches - Use a screen protector

#11

Hi everybody,

Just ruined a perfectly new prime by having some scratches on the screen. Unfortunately even minor scratches create rainbow like effects on the screen rendering it unusable.

I am really trying to like this calculator and I still think there is a lot of potential. But making such a scratch magnet screen cover is not ideal for education where people tend to throw and misuse their calculators.

I don't know whether the nSpire CX has the same problem as it seems to be more apparent with color screens than black and white.

I have found a solution, but it would have been nice if I found this earlier before needing a second Prime. I ordered HTC one screen protectors from eBay for $5 and they work like a charm, you just have to cut 4cm from the bottom to fit the screen. Part of the bezel is still exposed but that's ok with me.

Dear HP, I am eagerly waiting for new firmware and would love to see a next hardware revision with a scratch resistant screen, readable buttons. I do know that the resources are limited, but this calculator in its current shape is not going to win the hearts of scholars and engineers. It really has the potential though.

Kind regards,
Eelco

That is a good tip, Eeclo. I might get a screen protector myself. I'll be sure to keep keys and sharp objects away from the Prime.

How did you scratched the Prime?

Supposedly it has gorilla glass, much like any modern phone. I have an old Windows Phone (first release, 2-3 years ago) still pretty unscratched (I can see scratches but minor ones).

I really dislike the protectors and cases, because they remove sensibility from the screen and add bulkiness, respectively, so it is like using the device from a reduced experience.

Unfortunately,

I have to disappoint you. It is not Gorilla Glass that covers the Prime screen (I wish it would have been), but it is plain ordinary acrylic plastic or something else.

It is actually quite easy to scratch the screen (don't try it is my advice ;-)).

The screen protectors I've found are nearly invisible but work like a charm.

Kind regards, Eelco

Hey, wait a second, that's not true. Prime DOES have a Gorilla Glass screen. If yours doesn't, please contact HP right away, because somebody sold you a knock-off! A previous posting alerted us to the fact that Gorilla Glass is not scratch-proof, but it's not as easy to scratch as plastic! FWIW, I've been pounding on mine far more than any reasonable person, and have yet to get any scratches.

Disclaimer: The above was my opinion when I wrote it, but might not be my opinion by time you read it, so don't get your panties in a twist.

Even gorilla glass, or any other type will get scratches. I too have been unable to scratch any of my calcs. Then again, my kids managed to scratch a phone with supposedly indestructible glass...

Hmmmm,

That's strange, it really looks and feels like plastic and I have two Primes from different sources. One from Eric Rechlin (who is a bonafide source in my book) and one from CoolBlue, one of the bigger online retailers in Holland.

Well if it is gorilla glass, I've been wrong and sorry about that. The fact that it scratches easily worries me. It does explain why I haven't been able to remove the scratches.

My advice, just use a screen protector, and maybe it is an idea for HP to include a screen protector with the package.

Kind regards,

Eelco

...and hp-branded surgical gloves with conductive rubber to avoid leaving fingerprints on the case :D hahah

There are different types of Gorilla Glass. There are:

1. Scratch resistant glass. Sometimes mis-sold as Gorilla Glass. This stuff is crappy and scratches easily. My Lumia 820 has it and is scratched to bits.

2. Old Gorilla Glass. Pretty solid. Doesn't scratch easily but when it does, it looks terrible.

3. New Gorilla Glass. Bomb proof but expensive. My wife's Lumia 710 has this and there isn't even a dink on it after 2 years of being thrown in a bag with keys.

HP, judging by how cruddily built my 50g is (I mean battery cover coming off by itself, c'mon this is 2013) and the HP300s, it's probably either cheap stuff substituted by the upstream manufacturer or (2).

I was going to reply, "That's never happened to me!" when I reached over and grabbed my 50g... and the battery cover fell off.

You have powers you are unaware of, young Skywalker...

As Obi Wan told him at the salad bar - "Use the fork, Luke!"

I think I will stick with keeping screen scratching objects way from the Prime, just in case.
