Chris, this looks perfectly correct to me. Exponentiation is associative from right to left. The question is, how did you enter the expressions?

2 x^y 2 x^y 2 x^y 2

returns your first example, while

2 x² x² x²

returns the second.

To avoid ambiguity stick with RPN! :-)
