Hello all programmers, bug and hardware specialist:
I am looking into a dedicated site with server specializing in specific HP calcs, a clearing house of the problems associated with newer HP calculators. An offer of a server has come up however, being involved with the CL wiki; there were definite lack of use problems.
This came up due to the fact that this site is woefully inadequate for discussions involving the new trendy hardware. It occurred with the 15LE, the WP34S and now the Prime. The pertinent discussions and postings have a very short half-life, especially when a conversation pops up. This pushes previous topics down and off to the history archive site.
It also buries other topics concerning not so popular systems, such as HP67 keyboards, displays on 48gx and etc. After al, this is a Museum site, I don’t think we can assign the PRIME, HP41CL or the WP34S to the museum just yet ;-)
With that in mind, and because there is no polling option here, would a dedicated site such as the example below actually have a chance? Or are other sites including this enough? Any thoughts would be appreciated
WWW.HPPROJECTS.ORG
>WP34S
>PROGRAMS
>HARDWARE
>BUGS
>PRIME
>PROGRAMS
>HARDWARE
>BUGS
>15LE
>PROGRAMS
>HARDWARE
>BUGS
>HP41CL
>PROGRAMS
>HARDWARE
>BUGS
>50G
>PROGRAMS
>HARDWARE
>BUGS
...

Good idea
Needs doing so the bug can be listed and ticked off as it gets put right in the next version of firmware, and carried over if that particular one isn't fixed of course.
I think it would make it easier for HP to see what they need to fix too

Very good idea Geoff,
I'd really like such a site in order to get a issue tracking system in place.

Hi Geoff --
What's wrong with a wiki? That seems like a perfect place to track bugs, hardware issues, software issues, etc?
Am I missing something?
thanks,
bruce

Not at all, we just have to get people to go there. In fact I emailed many people about your site.
I think we must advertise it.
I should have stated:
I have an opportunity to help set one up : BUT let's get the others advertised as this may preclude the need to create yet another.
How do you like the suggestion listed at the top for structure?
Cheers, Geoff.

Structure? Perfect. I can put something in there like that right now.
And yes, it's all about participation and advertising. The more people link to pages on the site (not just the home page), the better the attendance. And the more people contribute, the more people will come (and link). It's kind of a catch-22, but once it starts building momentum, it will be everything we all want it to be.
BTW, I was hoping that one of the first *apps* to be built would be your collection of programs. I think that would be an awesome set! "Flight Pack 101" or something like that. :-)
Thanks,
bruce

In the works (APP) Bruce and thanks for the suggestion.
Well, when I get back from work (Sydney) I will cue up with you via email.
Yes, advertising, so someone every day must post here for a redirect!
Cheers,, Geoff

For what it's worth, I already have http://bugs.hpcalc.org/ for reporting bugs in calculators. Right now it's just for the 49/50, but I could probably add sections for other calculators if there's any demand.
Also, I am about to launch a Prime section on my web site for programs and documentation and stuff.
I set up a wiki a couple years ago but never got around to making it public. I may have to seed that with Prime information and bring that online, too, but that's a lower priority.
Really what we need is a better discussion forum. The comp.sys.hp48 newsgroup is perfect (despite its archaic name) but almost nobody seems to want to use that anymore. This site's forum is a disaster because links break a few weeks after comments are posted, making it practically useless for bookmarking useful posts.

good, up to date structured site/forum software is the key, and a catchy web address of course :-D
maybe Vbulletin?

A google group could do the job. For instance, there is a tinspire@googlegroups.com for the Nspire folks (and it has some activity!)
Or you could try to get a "comp.sys.hpprime" newsgroup, firstly by posting a "RFD" (request for discussion) to news.announce.newgroups, and then discussing the need for it at news.announce.proposals. This one is harder to fulfil, but has several advantages.
Either way you'll end up using the google groups service, which is free and works reasonably well. The museum could then just encourage puzzled Prime posters to go there...
I guess I'm not the only one that feels that the flood of bug reports here is killing all the fun (and it may well grow with the user base).

I for one think it is an EXCELLENT idea. I cannot wait to get my Prime, but I do not particularly care to read about it at the Museum. I go there for chatting about older models.
