JOT scientific calculator

Post: #2

$1 calculator at Dollar Tree. Has trig, hyp-trig, ln/log, y^x, unexpected: x root of y, conversions between rectangular and polar, deg.xxxx to degree, min, sec, basic stats, complex number (only -,+,*,/). Pretty remarkable for $1. Pocketable. Atrocious keyboard... horrid, horrid unit, yet remarkable what they can get into a $1 unit!

But in the brick-and-mortar stores you can buy individual units.

I have one of those $1 store calculators. The keyboard is awful. The keys are rubbery.

And that is if the calculator works. Many don't work right out of the package. Before buying in a store you want to poke the keys through the package and at least verify that all of the display segments activate.

I have opened one up. The switches under the buttons are a membrane keyboard. The membrane uses what looks like carbon ink for the traces and contacts. Obviously silver would be way too expensive.
There is a shim/stiffener beneath the keyboard made out of cardboard!

I got my dollar's worth just seeing the insides. :-)
