Promotional video

Turn your volume down if it is up... :-)

#67

Sweet! What's the battery life going to be like?

#68

It appears that the exponents aren't aligned correctly. I must admit that I'm not impressed.

Cheers

Thomas

#69

The firmware probably isn't at a "final" release stage yet, so I'd cut them some slack. Though it is a bit surprising that they'd choose to demo an aspect of it with such an obvious flaw.

#70

You saw the hint 'Simulated images' in the lower right corner?

Ciao.....Mike

#71

Yeah, the "simulated images" is the problem here. :-(

TW

#72

Please keep in mind the machine is in development and the presentations are based on that (and some photoshoping).

Seeing GT Springer's presentation and explanations to various attendees, I can tell you that the HP Prime should have been called HP King ... because it will be the meanest little beast on the market!! So save your money and be ready to buy at least one unit when it come out.

It's an easy guess that HHC2013 in Fort Collins will focus on HP Prime, So save your money and make reservations to be there. I think HHC2013 is going to be very special (no thanks to any talk I will give ...hahahaha)

Namir

#73

The simulated screens made by a designer not an engineer.
Like on a Silva Compasses brochure I saw something similar: N 47 87' 17" (S)he never heard about minute-arcs and other funny things.

#74

Drool, drool...

Can't wait!

#75

Enter key right above binary operators! Wrong side, but still nice :-).

Where? When? How much?

#76

Thomas; Wrong side is a point of view. This, this, this, this, this and this are fine with it, but they inhabit the mirror universe where RPN is everywhere and postfix is cool.

Tim; Yes- This hoax really has gotten out of hand, what with HP making a whole new calculator just to fool us into thinking..... Wait. Now i'm confused.

#77

At least the left side ENTER key people can look forward to the WP43S. The right side ENTER people may have lost on the survey but won with HP.

#78

Official information is "fall" and MSRP 149.95$US.

Don't forget that .95 cents. Very important that 95/100ths. :-D

TW

#79

Tim,

Is that the estimated launch date in the USA or globally? Downunder we normally end up having to wait a lot longer :-(.

Thanks,

Michael

#80

That is "worldwide". However what exactly that means and so on I do not know. I can only communicate the publicly available information we are sharing at the NCTM conference and with media outlets.

TW

Amazingly low MSRP, IMHO. But I still remember paying that much in 1972 ($835 in 2013!) for a four-function Bomar 901.

If I pay $150 in cash, may I have a 15¢ rebate and a pair of dimes change? :-)

#83

Looks beautiful!

Which SoC does it use?

#84

I have to be careful to only communicate information that has being publicly disclosed, so unfortunately I can't specify an exact processor or chip. I can say though that it is an ARM9 normally clocked at 400mhz. It definitely is not a chip that should be difficult to get information on.

TW

#85

Fair enough. Good to hear that it's not exotic like the one in the 39gii. Sounds like it could be a Freescale i.MX 25 or Atmel AT91SAM9G15, 25, or 45. I think NXP might also have some candidates.

#86

Could be a Samsung S3C2440, too. 400 MHz, ARM9, cheap, and a close relative of what's in the 50g. Or, there's newer variations, too.

And, there's actually a ton of SoCs meant for cheap Chinese netbooks running WinCE, but I'm thinking Samsung, they're the ones most likely to have good info available in that clockspeed range.

#87

Looks nice, wonder if it runs RPL programmes :-)?

Cheers,

Michael

#88

GREAT !!

#89

The ENTER key is exactly where it needs to be, for the first time in 30 years...above the /x-+ keys!

The industrial design looks very sharp...very refined and dignified.

It's great that it doesn't have one of those awkward model numbers that HP has used for the past 25 years...like "HP 50g+iis/b@3$" or some such thing. :-)

I've got to get one. When will the market be open?

#90

I second that (everything).

#91

I just hope they come up with a better name for it before it's finally released. Don't they plan on ever having a follow up to it? It reminds me of the HP Photosmart printer I once bought. Just try going to the HP website and searching for a driver for 'Photosmart'. It's impossible. Once they came out with a second photosmart printer they finally decided to give it a number too. But the first one was just 'Photosmart' with no other model number. It became a huge PITA.

#92

Perhaps the next one could be the HP "Composite" :-)

Jake

#93

If a 'Composite" is the product of many "Primes", I can't wait :)

#94

The new HP product name Prime could have been based on the US Department of Agriculture beef rating system. If so, the next product Choice would likely be good, but be wary of Select when it comes out. :-)

#95

Sure, and the next name can also be "Optimus" :)

#96

Quote:

or "double prime"? :-)

#97

My favorite is a more basic version, maybe without a CAS, called "sub prime". :-)

TW

#98

also smaller, bw display, plenty of programming capabilities, no unique lithium battery and better keyboard layout, I guess. Sounds like the 43s :)

#99

d:-)

Won't be anything "sub" about the 43S.

As I pointed out two weeks ago, one could wait for the HP Composite, or get multiple Primes and duct tape them together.

I'm sure the next one will be called "HP Prime Beef"

It has to! ;-)

I'm guessing there's a product number on the back of the printer? That'd at least be unambiguous to search with...

How about we call the updates something like Sophie Germain Prime, Mersenne Prime, Lucas-Lehmer Prime, Riemann Prime, there are countless (but probable a prime number) of possibilities.

Sexy... I'm all in -- so when can I buy one? =)

To Tim: can you share with us any details on whether users will have access to low-level programming capabilities? (e.g. something akin to MASD or JAZZ for the HP48/49/50 series?) I imagine it is an ARM-based device. Also, what sort of I/O does this thing sport?

Am I the only one already missing an SD card storage??

I remember vaguely Tim's winning entry for HP's Design-a-Calculator Contest (or something like that) many years ago was about an internet-connected calculator. Let's hope HP-Store won't replace the SD-Card :-)

TW - Congratulations on an awesome looking machine! Like all the rest here, I'm eager to get some hands-on time as this is the first handheld machine I've ever seen that really makes me want to do some real graphing. The demo screens showing the circle rotating while simultaneously plotting a curve is particularly effective.

Can you share with the group the reasoning for ENTER on the right side? It's not bad or wrong, IMHO, but as it's a first I'm sure we're all curious why?

Thanks for a peek at a very intereting future.

--bob prosperi

p.s. I bet you were just dieing to post the video....

The reasoning for a lot of things was driven by the desire to be consistent with expectations. People are used to large enter buttons on things like computer keyboards, and even touch keyobards on phones, and those are always on the right. People are used to seeing icons tied with "apps" and so the icon driven application catalog. There is something to be said for consistency with expectations in some ways.

That is actually the dynamic geometry application.

Actually, I'd never seen the video before Thursday morning at the booth. I knew it was being worked on, but really didn't know what it would look like. I think it turned out quite good actually.

TW

Doesn't look like worth upgrading.
I think the next upgrade would be the WP-43s for me.

Ditto!

The 34S project is finished. Bug fixes only now.

Unless someone else decides to start improving it.

Yes , I think so

Quote:

It is. I already have a 34 and I really like it; but I have the feeling that I'll like the 43 much better.

This "Prime" looks very fine ! The plotter seems very powerful. I verified that the ellipse in the video is the real plot of the equation f(x,y)=0 given before. But the interest and usability will be if it don't take hours to draw...

The problem seems to sit in front of wiktionary in this case (pun intended). Please read a bit further in said article.
