I just did some Googling, looks like it's actually getting announced Friday (2013-04-19), at 08:30 Mountain Time, at the NCTM conference.

With all due respect, "unannounced" is not the same thing as "hoax".

I've never worked for HP, but at most companies the preferred way for employees to deal with customers asking about or talking about unannounced (or nonexistent) products is to not reply at all, or to reply that the company doesn't comment on unannounced products, and/or to refer the people to the company's PR department. In other words, to neither confirm nor deny. Certainly not to claim that it is a hoax. In the past, when HP Corvallis Division employees did this, it was famously known as the "HP Blank Stare".

On the other hand, Steve Jobs at Apple publicly lied about the supposed nonexistence of various products prior to their release, such as the iPhone and iPad. I'm not sure what advantage he thought Apple gained by his lying, but as a rank-and-file employee of a company, I wouldn't publicly lie about anything about the company without having been told to do so by my manager, and confirmed by the HR department and the legal department. Far better to just say nothing.

I think your latter comment is the preferred option -- just say nothing. Lying should not be in the cards.

Lying about this sort of stuff is normal practice. Any hints released are a win for competitors. In this particular market, HP aren't in a great position so it's easy for TI to suddenly throw out a "me to" NSpire OS update therefore squashing the competition from HP instantly.

This has happened a couple of times for companies I've worked for and it's taken a good few years to get back on their feet.

It's business after all and at a corporate level, there is no honour.

Did you honestly take that seriously? To me it always looked like Tim just didn't want to say anything.

But maybe, being an engineer, I don't understand this whole business anyway. Our (my employers) marketing people are always concerned about us engineers letting the competition in on our secrets. Thing is, they can't tell the difference between state of the art and the real secrets.
