ClassPad 330 (Plus)

Any thoughts about these:

It looks like a possibly fun way to brush up on some fading math skills.

I'd be curious to hear opinions and comments.

My soon-to-be 8th grader will be needing a better calculator than the basic TI she's got now, and I'm thinking about moving her to the Inspire (or TI-84 at a minimum). I've tried to get her interested in HP calcs, even the non-RPN models, but I just don't think it's going to pass on to my next generation. ;-)

Oh well. Anyhow, it's a toss up now whether to look at an Inspire/TI-84, or consider the ClassPad (and I generally much prefer Casio as a second choice, rather than TI).

Thoughts?

(BTW, I do NOT want to restart the whole debate about TI calcs and teaching kids to use HP and whatever. I've been on these forums for 10 years, so I've heard it all before and I GET it. I want her to use HP as much as anyone. Just won't happen...)

I don't own a TI-84 of any sort, although I have come across them very occasionally in the hands of students. They can do a lot but there are other TI calculators that I prefer. I really like the TI-89 (or the larger-screened Voyage 200): these do all that the TI-84 does (I think) and add a good CAS. I think that the NSpire machines are rather too complicated to make full use of, but others may disagree.

I also have a ClassPad. It's powerful and fascinating, but the combination of keyboard and stylus-operated touchscreen display makes it fiddly to use. I think that for doing numerical calculations with a few mathematical functions it wouldn't be as fast as one of the other machines.

Personally, I'd put the TI-89 or Voyage 200 at the top of the list. But they probably won't be allowed in exams.
