What is the best case you have had for a handheld?

Hello!
What do you mean by "case"? The housing of the calculator, the protective sleeve or the packaging box (the English language is a bit unspecific here - at least for us non-native-speakers).
But I will answer all three:
Best housing: The silver and/or gold plated metal housings of Sinclair Sovereigns. (I personally prefer silver over gold - but to be sure I must wait a few days longer as my gold plated Sovereign is still in the mail :-) )
Best pouch: The (optional) real leather case for the HP-15 (or 10,11,12,16). Simply perfect for the job.
Best box: The marine-style wooden boxes of the Tamaya NC2 (blue) and NC77 (dark red) Astronavigation calculators. The perfect case for a precision tool!
Regards,
Max

Agreed! The very best!
As to hard cases: For 42s and 17Bii, nothing beats the ASTECH hard case. Perfect protection for use in the field and doesn't hinder the use of the calculator. In fact, I think the calculator is easier to use since, when the case is opened and hinged back on itself, the calculator slopes at a perfect working angle. And the printer IR is not covered so the printer can also be used.

For the HP-41: The semi-hard case for the HP-35S

?!? - you mean, you want to squeeze the HP-41 into the case that came with the 35s? The one with the zipper and the two rubber bands inside that hold the 35s in place? How do you do that? The 41 is much thicker, it simply does not fit. Yes, I just tried. ;-)

I would agree on the gold plated Sovereign, but not the silver plated one - these turn ugly pretty fast. Or did you think of the chrome one? Or the massive gold one (now *those* are hard to find, I think they made less than a hand full of them.)
I still have a Sharp EL-8009 in a massive sterling silver case (foldout calculator). I don't think there is a HP counterpart. *But* there was a TI counterpart - a sterling silver glue-on case for a TI 1760 (I had that one as well). Tiffany and Cartier made :)

Does anyone have a pic of these gold/silver plated cases??
They sound cool. But I only use 71B & 41s. Do they have gold cases as well?

Does anyone know how to open up one of these? I'm usually pretty good a figuring out how to get inside almost any calculator but the sovereigns have baffled me.

I have only seen one of these ever being opened, and that was a damaged one (*before* the opening). I don't think these can be opened without destroying them, probably glued together (like the Executive).

"un-openable" that doens't sound good to me, actually it sounds like a challenge! Even if it's glued together there must be some way to break the glue bond without destroying the case.
The silver one (shown above) has stopped working, I think that there is some corrosion inside. The switch seems to work in that the circuit draws some current (13 ma) when on, but that's not enough to turn on the display. It might indicate a corroded PCB trace as there was some corrosion in the battery compartment.

I opened mine!
Let me get home and I will post the pictures. The case separates from the sides like a normal snap together. Fixed a blck one that way although I am looking for a shell with good silk screening.
Not glued, but snaps.

Haha!
With that calculator, you can balance your checkbook while simultaneously changing the channel on your 1980s Zenith and also beam Scotty up to the Enterprise.

When compared to a modern remote control, I'd prefer this design anytime. I guess industrial designers don't have honor or pride any more - just create the cheapest-as-possible piece of plastic junk, that's good enough for the buyer :)

Well, I have a gold plated Brother LCD calculator as well. Comes with a really nice genuine leather case and a luxury box. Probably as nice as the Sinclair and quite as rare :)

For me, it's just a personal dislike for gold (not the type that's locked up somewhere in a bank safe...). I could never wear a golden watch. I also dislike the golden (or goldish) trim on HP's financial calculators. And you are right, the chrome (or stainless steel?) version looks neater than the silver one, but is less rare and precious.
I read somewhere that they only made three massive golden Sovereigns, one of them for Sir Clive.

COOL CASES!! I drive a Rolls and would not mind at all throwing my 71b on the passenger seat in a gold/silver/platinum case.
You guys really have it all.

I would nominate the 25th Anniversary Edition leather (maybe vinyl) case for the HP 12C Platinum.
I have two of them.

Not one I've personally owned but the wooden case for the Tamaya NC-2 is pretty special. Then again, I like wood.
