how can I retrieve the firmware version?
When you get your new 15c LE, press and hold the g key, then press and hold the ENTER key, then press and hold the ON key, then simultaneously release all three keys. This should result in the following display:
1.L 2.C 3.H
Now press the “2” key. This should result in a display like this:
1ChE--FFFFh
The above is a checksum (or similar) for the current firmware version. Earlier versions had a different value, it is presumed that any future version will also have a different value.
Now press ENTER. This should result in a display like this:
2011-04-15
This the date of firmware version loaded on your machine, the above is the date of the current version. Earlier versions had a different date, it is presumed that any future version will also have a different value.
Press ENTER again. This should result in a display like this:
C 2008 hP
I assume this is HP’s copyright notice for the firmware code, it has not changed since the first version.
Pressing enter again will take you back to the first menu. Press 1 or 3 to try those out if you want, they do tests of the keyboard and/or display. To exit, press ON at the main menu.

Is the firmware updatable?
Yes.

I guess a cable is needed…
Yes, a cable is needed. It is the same cable required to turn a 30b into wp34s. These have been supplied by Gene Wright, search for posts by him then contact through the Forum to see if they are still available and further details.

has anyone had such an experience?
Yes.

What is the procedure?
Well, it’s a bit convoluted and fraught with pitfalls. As Thomas states, there is no revised firmware and HP has given no indication if there ever will be. So perhaps you could get your cable and if new firmware is ever released come back and ask for the procedure.
