HP41CV Keys Beep

Post: #4

My HP41CV beeps with every key stroke. Does anyone know what I can do to stop this annoying beep?

Yes. Either press the BEEP key (which is a shifted function on the keyboard) or do XEQ [ALPHA]TONE[ALPHA]9.

This problem can occur due to a bug in most systems. If you have the TIME module it probably beeps every second as well.

Thanks. It worked exactly as you said.

Now why didn't the manual tell me this??

Well, because HP didn't intend for that to happen. It's a bug. The bug is documented in a book called "Extending your HP41" and probably other places.

I think it happens when there's some 'dirt' left in the tone register.

If you take the battery pack out or let it slowly slip out and then put it back, this can sometimes happen too.

I don't have my copy handy, but what was/is the three-button key-press that turns on the keys to beep?

Thanks,
Matt

I've gotten it to occur on my CX which implements the Reset option (ENTER+ON). If you execute BEEP and then press ENTER+ON trying to time that reset during a BEEP, the "problem" will occur. It may take several times to get it to happen. Be sure to press the ENTER key first and then ON or the unit will turn off. Try to time the pressing of the ON key with the occurance of a BEEP.

Thanks for your detailed description... I remembered the timing of pressing the keys was important. In 1987, we used to play this beeping trick on unsuspecting co-workers before they arrived at work. There was also the small program to turn the 41 off as soon as it was turned on.
Fun memories.

Thanks again,
Matt
