Question about Hungarian Sellers on TAS

Hi All, Can anyone tell me (especially our European friends on this site) why do Hungarian sellers on TAS attempt to sell calculators and pocket computers at very high prices?????

Apparently it's this forum's nickname for Ebay - stands for "That Auction Site". Being in the UK, I initially thought it must be some other US auction site until I ventured to ask here. So you're not the only one to have been puzzled ! ▼

This recurring question about TAS meaning surely belongs in the FAQ. I won't bother our host about that, however, as he's apparently very busy lately. ▼

I agree. I feel it is incredibly irresponsible to new people here when others refer to things in code. Given the history, I can understand the whole "TOS" debacle, but everyone, please stop using "TAS" to refer to eBay. There is no reason this should be a FAQ, because everyone should just stop this immaturity. Eric ▼

I suggest all forum members go back and carefully read the curators "Terms of Use" agreement. Dave clearly wants to discourage ebay discussions on this forum. If you have been around very long then you know how disruptive these discussions have become in the past. Still some members insist on ignoring this simple request and attempt to conceal their disrespect by making reference to TAS rather than ebay. Sad. ▼

Donald, I read the Terms of Use and don't see any prohibition about discussing Ebay and auction sites. Indeed, Dave says discussions about them may come up from time to time. What Dave does say is that if you refer to a specific Ebay auction, you need to list your Ebay ID in your post; it seems that that frequently doesn't happen, so that would be a violation. This thread is not about a specific auction, it is just a general question that Namir has and I believe it is appropriate and not in violation of the Terms of Use. ▼

I don't think I used the term prohibited. I used the term discouraged. Otherwise, I agree with all points of your response. I do not believe this particular thread violates those terms. No offense intended. IIRC the term "TAS" came into existence following the the additional paragraph added to the terms of use concerning ebay discussions. I think forum members originally used this term in jest, and it has persisted since. I do confess however, IMOHO if all ebay discussions were prohibited it would be no great loss. ▼

I think it is discouraged because this forum is so "ripe" for commercial abuse. In the past eBay sellers have focused on this "primo" site to show case their auctions, and then later, began a "flame war" campaign to discredit one another. It became so contentious and ridiculous that Dave was forced to step in and personally censor posts and eventually instigate some changes to the forum. Hence the long running taboo over mentioning eBay and the use of the pseudonym "TAS". I think the abuse still exists at a much lower level,and those individuals will be more than willing to ramp it back up given the opportunity.

I can sympathize with that. Still finding units at garage sales, flea markets, 2nd hand would be wonderful.

No offense taken, Donald. I personally don't find the Ebay discussions in this forum very useful either. I buy things on Ebay now and then, and I've never had a bad experience, but I'm aware there are crooks out there so you have to be careful. Dave is a very good moderator and he will not ban discussions here unless they are extremely offensive to a large number of people--and I don't think I've ever seen that happen. There are some discussions I don't find very interesting, but I'm learning just to pass them over in the list.

There is a Hungarian equivalent to Cobubba that is to Sharp as Cobubba is to HP. There is the occasional low starting price auction, but admittedly few. I generally ignore auctions if I see Country is Hungary, Italy or any from the far east. Personaly I think they see the rest of Europe & US as "people to make lots of money from". Harsh? maybe, but the result of my observation that most of them list calculators with high starting prices/BIN (I don't mind bidding on items with reasonable starting prices, but not several times what it normally sells for). |
