My order for the HP15C LE came in and I immediately fired the calculator up. After my first computation, I ran the self test for the heck of it. Display comes back immediately reading "ERROR 9"
Not happy.
I waited 25 years for this?

That's normal! It is the firmware of the original being emulated, and it's normal that the self test doesn't work because it is designed for the original hardware. There is a different self test, I don't know from the top of my head how it works but I'm sure someone here will post it soon :) ▼

There are three 15C LE self tests, all different from those that apply to the original 15C; the manual revision process failed to reflect this. An authoritative HP person says this about the LE tests, quote:
This also applies here to the 15. -- Tim Wessman

BTW, the original keyboard self-test still works as long as you are *FAST*. The calculator speedup causes a time-out otherwise. Cheers,

If I am very "fast" on ON-X, I get 2.00. What does that mean? Always get error 9 on ON-+.

You can review postings to this list since September 9 (when gamma testers first got their 15C-LE) to see all the issues thus far identified. I identified this failure of the original self tests within five minutes of receiving mine that date. More serious, however, is the other problem that I identified that date with the original self tests: Performing the ON plus * or the ON plus + self tests will corrupt program memory! While we're at it, my other and most serious discovery on September 10 was the display irregularities that occur after two or more PSE commands are executed in a program's runstream. The HP 15C-LE's new self tests are the same as those for the HP-12C+. Start them by turning the calculator OFF, push and hold g and ENTER keys, push ON, then release all keys. Enjoy.

Real Self Test for 15C LE linked here No idea why this procedure was left out of the printed manual that came with the 15C LE. As others have noted it is the same as the new 12C's in fact the link actually indicates 12C. I printed a copy and included it with the 15C LE's print manual. ▼

The problem isn't with the printing, but the editing. ▼

It is when the Chinese printer ignores the US editor.

All this is putting emphasis on the wrong things. Even IF the manual had been printed as desired, which was to have NO reference to any type of self test at all:
(1) That leaves in existence a couple of keyboard actions that can corrupt program memory that should NOT corrupt anything (ON plus * and ON plus +). A properly edited manual would NOT cause those problems to go away!
(2) The real self tests would NOT be described in the manual. That is certainly a deficiency.
(3) An unnecessary deficiency and difference between the HP 12C+ and the HP 15C-LE exists. The HP 12C+ apparently tolerates performance of BOTH the old self tests AND the new self tests without any problems arising. One wonders why that doesn't also apply to its doppelgaenger, the 15C-LE. Taking into account the Chinese talent in copying, I bet they printed exactly what was given to them. Textbook example for GIGO I guess. |
