Invisible message passing

In MoHPC's information about the HP-48S/SX's infrared output a statement says, "HP limited the range of 2-way communication at the request of teachers who were nervous about invisible message passing". Now-a-days, of course, you can't stop students from passing messages short of taking their cell phones away from them ... which I think would be a great idea. ;-)

While most schools don't actually ban cell phones, they do prohibit their presence during classes. Students can keep their phone in their pocket (or purse), but if a teacher sees the student in class with a phone, it then belongs to the principal.

The school at which I teach (a private boarding school) prohibits cell phones and all electronic devices. Public schools probably couldn't get away with that.

My daughter said that in 7th and 8th grade, she and her friends could send text messages without even taking the phone out of their pocket. They learned to do it entirely by feel. So the only hard part was sneaking a peek at the phone to read the messages.

Perhaps that skill may one day lead to everyone having a tiny wireless transmitter/receiver implanted in the body, and the brain is able to send and receive messages and thoughts from other brains.
