iDOS Lives! Get it while you can (IOW, EMU71/EMU41 on iPad/iPhone)!

iDOS is back up on the App store and it's free. The catch is that you cannot use iTunes to place your files in iDOS, so no EMU*.*.

However, there is a work around. Install iPhone Explorer for Windows or Mac. Then you can browse the file system of your i* device and then drag and drop files to your iDOS Doc folder.

BTW iPhone Explorer is easier to use than iTunes for file xfers, so its really no loss. iPhone Explorer is free.

I've now got the HP100LX connectivity pack running on my ipod. It's really tiny but everything (calculator w/solver, phone book, database etc.) works and on an ipad I think it would be just great.

Requirements seem to suggest a jailbroken iPhone to put Mini vMac on one.

I should have been clearer on this, I have an iPod Touch 3rd gen. You have to have an iPhone, iPad or iPod Tocuh for iDOS. It will work on any generation device as long a iOS 4.0 or later is running.

Like Gene said, you have to Jailbreak to run it. It is out of date and has no direct support for iPad or Retina Display (iPhone 4).

If you have a $99/year Apple dev lic you could build it yourself, however the tool chain used is not Apples, so it may be a bit more cumbersome.

How do you QUIT a DOS app in iDOS?

I got the 71b running and could do a CAT ALL, etc. But how do I exit the EMU71 app in the iPhone environment?

Many DOS Programs could be exited via either Q , ESC, F10, or alike. What does the Emu71 doc tell about this?

In any case, keying in OFF should exit the emulator...

Very cool. Okay, so I have a couple of questions.

First, how do you get those different views? When I run iDos, I don't see the computer-looking screen and so on. I just get a window with a see-thru keyboard. Am I missing some way to change settings or configuration options?

Second, when I go to the generic dos prompt, how do I get back? If I try the traditional "exit", the app locks up until I soft rest my iPad. That can't be the way to get back out...

Next, I have emu71 running, along with a couple of games, and they're great. iPhone Explorer works fine, if a bit clunky. ;-) Where are some good references on how to use EMU71 to actually do things?

Finally, I would love to get cpack200 or any of the 200LX Connectivity Pack stuff running, however I realized last night that although I have the 3.5" floppies, I no longer have a computer with floppy disk drives! Ugh! Any idea of where to get a copy of the connectivity pack online? Or am I going to have to resurrect one of my old desktops just to transfer it.

Try rotating the screen. On the iPhone/landscape view press the top of the screen. iPhone/portrait view press the keyboard icon on the bottom of the screen. Config options are under the sprocket icon.

Don't type exit. Press the top-left corner of the screen to get back to the GUI. If you type exit again, press the sleep button until you get the "slide to power off", then release the sleep button and press the home button. That will kill any iPhone hung app without a restart.

EMU71 is the same as 71B, I'd read the 71B docs and the EMU71 docs on the extra features (e.g. HP-IL emulation, configuration, etc...)

If I get into the iExplorer I don't see a directory which appears appropriate to put DOS-files into.[n]

The point is: I can't find that "iDos" folder in the folder tree.

I tried hard but I didn't find it in the folder system as offered by the iExplorer.

I too am having issues with the iDOS/iPhone Explorer combonation. In the left column of the iPhone Explorer, it sees the 8HLDK844H7.net.litchie.idos subdirectory within the Apps subdirectory of the iPad but when I click on it, iPhone Explorer says 'file not found.' As a matter of fact, trying to open any of the subdirectories listed report 'file not found.'

But in the white bar just below the pull down menus, that shows the iPad ID name and path and at the bottom, iPhone Explorer accurately reports how much RAM is in use. I am trying to use the iPhone Explorer as a standard app (in Windows XP) to browse through the file structure in the iPad but perhaps that's a misconception on my part.

What am I doing wrong?

IIRC I had a very similar experience after the initial installation of explorer. After a reboot all worked well. Try the reboot.

To make things more interesting, I loaded a CPM emulator and now have cpm programs running on a iTouch. Can't hardly read the screen, but still fun. Next to try a TRS-80 emulator.

Too bad iDOS has been pulled again. It could be a lot of fun to play with on a iPad (if I ever get one).

Well, if you get an iPad, all apps that you have in your iTunes account can be installed on it too. There is no limit to the number of iDevices that you can use on an iTunes account, and all apps can be installed on all devices (no need to repurchase and Apple won't remove it from your iTunes library).

So, when you get your iPad (presumably iPad 2, it's just around the corner and it is rumoured to have a much better spec), just sync it to your computer and all the apps from your iTunes library will be loaded onto it. Even if an app has been withdrawn in the meantime (though if the authors remove the root file system access, I am guessing that Apple will approve of the app again).

Someone on engadget posted a way to get to the iPhone / iPad / iPod touch root/ file system from within iDOS!

Probably considered a BAD Thing by Apple. Just guessing.

Do a google search and you'll find out how to do it. Why? Not sure.

Knew that wouldn't last. They're facing an uphill battle as every time Apple removes it, and the developer modifies it to make Apple happy, people will discovering more things it can do that Apple doesn't like.

The problem with the iPhone is that it is a computer, but (despite your purchase) it is not your computer, it is Apple's computer.

If you want a smart phone you actually own, without having to depend on clever people to jailbreak it and fight an arms race with the vendor, buy an Android based phone instead.

The only DOS emulator I can find on the Android Market (by searching for "DOS") is a DosBox port called "PLAY PC GAMES ON YOUR DROID." (No kidding, that's the app name.) They don't provide source, and mention a whole lot of bugs in the implementation. They also say it's pointless to use it without a hard keyboard. I was wondering if anyone had tried this? Alternatively, are there other DOS emulators on the Market that I am missing?

Missed iDOS for my iPod this time around too. I should read this forum more frequently.

I'm certainly not claiming that there's a Android equivalent for every iPhone app. However, since Android is an open platform, over time it becomes more likely that you will find an app that does what you want for Android, especially since Apple wants to limit what you can do with the iPhone and iPad, while Google wants you to be able to do whatever you want.

Many people have pointed out the irony of Apple advertising in 1984 that their products would help you seize control from Big Brother, but that now Apple is trying to BE Big Brother.

I'm an Android user for that very reason, Eric. You still have to deal with the carrier's shenanigans, but at least the phone OS isn't an opaque padlock. Even without "rooting" an Android phone, you have the capability of installing your own software on the device, for example. You can also get around most of the carrier silliness without blowing up the phone.

So I'm not slamming Android when I ask about a DOS emulator. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of one. :)
