Starting from scratch...

#32

... Or, the revenge of the four-banger RPN calculator...

I was asking to myself if anyone in this forum ever toyed with the
idea of building a simple (or even not so simple) RPN calculator using
a simple calculator as "body" and an atmel or microchip
microcontroller as "brain" ???

#33

While lacking the tactile feedback and the battery life, a software emulator running on a Palm or PocketPC seems the current trend. There are many, some of them free, and you can design your own.

#34

The idea of implementing a "real" hardware device was intended to
address the user interface issues: from the software point of view,
even the smallest microcontroller has far more computation power than
any "classic" hp calculator, and in a modern PDA you could well run a
reasonable version of "Mathematica", but the look and feel of a real
calculator is a whole different thing...

#35

Hi;

I've posted a proposal on this about eight or nine months ago: building a complete RPN calculator.

I'm gonna find the starting point (about the end of 2001) when some sort of experiment involving reles, external switches and extra wiring in an HP42S (so it could be externally programmed) was also proposed.

Pavel Korensky is already dealing with ATMel controlers, and I believe HrastProgrammer is closer to a virtual machine. If we have a derivative of this virtual machine and the HW to be controled by it, adding a keyboard, LCD, case and batteries is not that hard.

Should we try rolling it over?

Cheers.

#36

Well, the issue is the user interface...

A simple bcd based (12 digits mantissa and 2 1/2 digits exponent)
floating point arithmetic library is trivial on an atmel processor --
I have it working since a very long time, in fact I was looking for a
"china-style" four banger, strong enough to be opened and closed again
to work as a donor for the keyboard and the LCD.

#37

Hello;

will you post an article here about it? (HW/SW)

AHN?

#38

Currently there's no hardware: the software runs on a bare atmel
evaluation board, and uses serial i/o to communicate. Currently I've
only implemented the basic four operations, but I was investigating
the possible algorithms to be used to implement logarithmic and
trigonometric functions...

#39

Hello, Chris;

is there any e-place where I can download info about this evaluation board? There are many things I'd like to try, and I am A LOT interested on sharing information. By now, my ideas must be typed out already. And I believe starting with updated platforms is the first right step.

Thanks for your answer. I'll keep this forum updated as I get results, too.

Cheers.

#40

You can buy AVR evaluation boards in most of the online electronics
shops, like rs-components, digi-key etc... If that fails, you can
check atmel's site (www.atmel.com) -- I think they have software based
emulators freely downloadable.

#41

Talking about atmel's product, the recently released MARC4 (4 bits)
architecture, provides a very good foundation for a BCD based
calculator:

http://www.atmel.com/atmel/products/prod57h.htm

The development kit is forth based, and most of the forth words are
directly mapped to cpu instruction...

#42

Hi;

have a look here and try this post. There is some more stuff about it...

Cheers.

#43

Hi Chris,

Based on a number of postings on a variety of calculator boards including this one, there is a need for a non-programmable simple scientific at the very least. It seems that a lot of instructors will not permit programmable scientific calculators or calculators that can store equations or expressions during tests.

I believe that there would be a market for an RPN calculator comparable to an HP-32SII without equation storage and without programmability, but with all other features. [Of course there would be no need for integration and solver functions since there would be no equation storage and no programmability.] It might be expedient to use numbered storage registers in such a calculator for the sake of simplicity and to avoid another instructor complaint, alpha-numerics. Of course, you would still want to be able to display hex digits, all you would need is the 7 bar display such as the display on the HP-20S.

I wouldn't mind a non-programmable algebraic HP-20S type of machine with fraction capability [I hear the jeers already!]. That is, with the full set of features of the HP-20S including multiple memories and the "2-level? last stack" -- NOT the hp-6s. Note that fraction capability is essential in today's market.

I would like to see programmable versions as well, but the above units might be a good starting point. Some additional points -- I would like to see 3 digit exponents and a level of accuracy comparable to the HPs. I would like to see solar power with battery backup with the batteries easily replaceable, i.e., a battery compartment so you don't need a screwdriver to take the calculator apart in order to replace the batteries, and clearly, continuous memory for the memory registers as well as the stack, although the latter is not entirely essential.

Also, it would be nice to have buttons for standard scientific constants, e.g., Avogadro's Number, etc. -- See e.g, the TI-36X. And of course, add the "Persnickety Professor" key -- CLEAR EVERYTHING, because some instructor will insist that you use such a key before the big test. The display should produce an "ALL CLEAR" message, of course.

What would really be nice is such a calculator that is switchable between algebraic and RPN, but which uses an algebraic entry system when in algebraic mode that is similar to that of the "HP-71B". However, that is probably beyond the scope of a simple wish list.

Meanwhile ...

#44

Hi;

may I?

I agree with all points mentioned as operating adds, but allow me to express my feelings as a teacher.

I teach Math, Computer Science, Telecommunication (Basics, Switching Networks and Switching Systems), Interface Design (basic logic level, HW simulation, parallel/serial connection - IBM PC compatibles, Linux/Windows platform), Algebra Theory (Urgh!), among others (remember: I'm in Brazil, I must survive...) and I do not only allow students to use any calculator as I show them a better way to use them. If you can learn how to program, you will not waste time turning the calculator into a Formula Storage Place. I have seen students trying to figure out a solution only to program the calculator! That's amazing.

What I don't understand is prohibiting students to use calculators. I prefer teaching them how to use it in an instructive way. I believe this is the major reason the HP38 did not find its place here in Brazil. Neither professors nor students are acquainted with calculators in mid or high school.

My daughter is 10 YO and I gave her an HP6S cause the HP32SII is no longer easily available. I'm teaching her how to achieve results with pencil and paper, and I cause some errors so she needs to be care with wrong results. After being sure of the answer, I ask her to reproduce the calculus in the calculator. She sees the machine as something funny, and she asks me almost everytime: "Is the calculator's result right?". She trusts more in her pencil and paper development.

I believe there is a lack between learning and using a tool to learn. Forgive-me if I am wrong, but I'll bet.

Back to the calculator design: I agree (you didn't ask for someone's opinion, but I would like expressing it, too) with easy, fast-using RPN or Algebraic machines, and programmable feature available to the big ones. But I would like to know: do you believe a brief research on which features people would like to see in RPN (or algebraic) calcs would help defining goals?

Best reegards.

Luiz, It sounds like you are a good teacher. You are teaching the students to use tools/resources that are available to them to solve problems. There are some formulas that should be memorized, such as converting C to F degrees or Miles/inches to Km/cm. But IRL (In Real Life) most workers have access to formulas in texts. So, it has little value for a student to memorize anything just for a test if it will be forgotten, but easily looked up, after the test. I prefer to think of life as "an open book test",
as most of the problems we encounter that require the use of a complex formula/algorithm can be found in a nearby book.
But a student must know the relationship between the problem and the result to properly use any formula. As in the earlier example of C to F, the student needs to know that they have a different baseline (zero degrees) and which unit is larger than the other to get the correct result. One speaker put it this way..."Many schools have an algebra class that has students figure the height of the flagpole by measuring its shadow and the angle of the sun. But how many also suggest that asking the janitor may get the right answer sooner?"

One of my biggest frustrations as a student is when I'm being taught to know something (for a test) and not told when/where this information is useful in real life. So many teachers are removed from the "real world" they don't even know where their course applies outside of the classroom. One of the best electronics teachers I had, worked in a transistor factory during his summer break. He was able to teach us both transistor "theory" and transistor "fact".

A couple of years ago I took a Discrete Mathematics course. Much of the material was new to me, and I had a difficult time learning it. The teacher and text failed to teach practical applications of the formulas (formulae?).
Since then, I have seen these formulas used in other courses, and ask myself "Why didn't they say back then, this is what it is useful for?" Matrix calculations come to mind. I did not see any use for them until a programming class showed that you can "resize" a graphic using a matrix calculation, then the "reason" for a matrix started to make sense.

Again, I did not see why RPN would be a "better way" to do math, until I read the webpages here at hpmuseum.org explaining the working of the stack.

#46

wishlist time:

non programmable: RPN, fractions, deep enough stack to work through larger equations (12 levels should be adequate), sci, eng, deg, rad.

programmable: clamshell (or another good keyboard interface), graphic area approx that of the 48 series, 512k ram onboard plus MMC (or similar) interface for additional flash. 2-4 rs232 ports for data acq. and sharing. RPN, RPL, some decent onboard assembler/compiler. Solver, CAS, software libraries.

(the grey areas of an actual tcp/ip stack are kinda beyond what people think of as a "calculator", but I'd rather have 802.11b in my 28/48/49 than in my Visor. I can use both to check email, in theory, but most of what I want do do beyond email/text browsing/downloads/messaging involves programming and calculator functions. So, if it's a true "wish" list, gimme a pc card slot and a tcp/ip stack. but- keep it a calculator at the root.)

#47

Hi Christof,

My ealier wishlist was related to a minimal QUALITY scientific calculator that would be marketable at a reasonable price and would provide a foothold in the market. It was not intended for the high end of the market.

In addition, as stated elsewhere, such a calculator would serve as an introduction for a high quality calculator and/or calculator company in the market. The hope is that the introductory audience would eventually purchase higher end calculators. I believe that the maximum price point would have to be in the $30 range or cheaper. [Maybe there isn't even such a market, because students are more likely to purchase an $11 Casio fx-260, an HP-6S, a TI-30, or similar.] Needless to say, students would not be the only market. Nevertheless, they would probably be the primary market, initially.

#48

No... Not that at all.
In the end you want mathematica for a PDA, whereas my idea is just the
opposite: a dead simple -- nearly like the classic "four bangers" --
rpn calculator, something that anyone can build, and maybe modify to
suit his needs, not the ultimate pda-calculator-cell
phone-videogame-terminal-clock-media player...

#49

Chris,

if the HP 6S existed in an RPN version (say HP 6S RPN), disregarding other features which are not in line with the well known HP quality (at least in the past), would it be a calculator that we are talking about?

#50

Yeah. That would be the idea, like a non programmable HP-10C (besides,
I suppose that the marginally programmable 10C could be considered
non-programmable, by today's standards)...

#51

i can't get the site to come up today but some guy is building a pretty basic red led rpn using off the shelf parts and has/had documented it on his web page. i used to check in ocasionally by finding "retrocalc" on google.

#52

Hi;

I found this, but I cannot open it. Can anyone check for local providers? Maybe I'm in congestion time in here...

Cheers.

#53

Is this the site you made reference to?

http://pub8.ezboard.com/fhpcccalculatorclubgeneral.showMessage?topicID=19.topic

#54

The idea is somewhat similar, but my point was to use an existing calc
body (say a TI105?) with new "guts": building a decent case, a decent
display and a decent keyboard without ending up with something that
looks like a brick (or a borg cube) is not easy...

#55

yes, those addresses are the right guy and area but the pictures / updates page is still not loading.

hey chris - if it turns out looking like a borg cube remember; marketing is everything nowadays. the box can have that borg queen babe with those "think bubbles" that hp uses on their new packages saying "RESISTANCE IS FUTILE. BUY ME!"

#56

Hello,

Maybe it is out of the "dreams" you have.. But, have you seen giac/xcas project from Bernard Parisse? I am helping him in Spanish translation and some other minor things.. The idea is desinging a C++ CAS that could be embedded in any system.

Nowdays it works in linux and m$ windows. But the reason to post it here is that it works in linux handhelds too. I am using it in an iPaq3100 (same price than a hp49, more or less) with Familiar distro on it (http://www.handhelds.org ). I hope someday we could see it in a specific machine (an advanced handheld calculator)..

More info in:
http://www-fourier.ujf-grenoble.fr/~parisse/giac.html

Of course, the project is under GPL license.. so it is free!

Cheers,
J.Manrique

#57

Hi;

I didn't dare so deeply, but there is something in your post that called my attention: the iPaq3100.

Should I guess it's a Compaq? The same Compaq that is about to merge with HP? So, should we think Compaq also has its own portable division? Not only notebooks, but PDA's and the like?

Should we guess Compaq, with HP, would head back to calculator development? Maybe this is a daring dream...

Well, I don't have knowledge enough (at least for now) to go so deeply by myself. But emulating CAS in a Linux environment is fancy. Under C++? Wow!

Good knowing about it. Best regards.

#58

While Compaq has had no calculator line or anytning close, it used to have HP-like quality at its beginnings (look for info about the LTE 386sx, around 1990, for example). Their current PDA line, called iPaq, is rather good and successful, and it may replace the HP Jornadas (just guessing).

By the way, Compaq was founded by three ex-TI engineers...

While their current PDAs are Windows CE based, both HP and Compaq showed prototypes of Linux based PDAs.

In particular, you can search for info about a Linux based, prototype/concept model from Compaq, nicknamed "Itsy", which replaces some of the usual buttons with an internal accelerometer. Moving the PDA towards or apart of the user, or swinging it sideways, or turning it around in your hand produce zooming or paging actions... neat concept!!

#59

Well,

You can get more info about linux in Compaq, oops, I mean, HP Ipaq handhelds in:

http://www.handhelds.org

And, yes, Jornada ("old" HP handhelds) have been discontinued, to let new HP iPaq be the main "new HP" handheld.

Have fun,

J.Manrique

PS:Anyway, I have hear that new calculators will come from Asia next January ... Have anybody hear it?

#60

I strongly suggest to you all to take a look to Compaq-HP "ITSY". Any search engine will point you to articles about it, but in Compaq Reserach Labs website you can download (well, ask for an email link for later download...) hardware specifications (I have not received them yet), firmware and Linux port information.

Itsy is an interesting concept, and may include nice ideas which we don't need to reinvent by ourselves. A RPN calculator should be an easy port for some of the Linux-Java usual visitors of the MoHPC, for instance porting the already excellent HP25 emulator shown here (with permission to be asked for and obtained from the author, and due credit given, of course!)

The information from HP-Compaq is supposed to include bill of materials, printed circuit board design, case manufacturing information, etc. Itsy is conceived as PDA, based on Intel StrongArm SA110, currently used in Compaq iPaq PDAs, has a monochrome display (240 x 320) and a Li-Ion battery. Alas, as a PDA concept, it DOES NOT include a physical keyboard the way any HP calculator fan would like to have; but I suppose it could be designed in as an option.

Before receiving the information there are legal-license conditions that anybody willing to work on this should examine and accept. Only after accepting such conditions the specifications will be available for you to download...

I have not seen many such "semi-freebies" coming from well established manufacturers, it seems to be something to look at.

(Well, I must admit I have a soft spot for both HP AND-OR Compaq. Fortunately, as my soft spot is NOT for HP XOR Compaq, I am as well as before with them going together)

#61

http://research.compaq.com/wrl/projects/itsy/

#62

Hello,

The people that research linux for "old compaq" handhelds are "old compaq" engineers.. they work for the "new HP" right now.Maybe their kownledge could be usefull for future linux embedded handhelds.. who knows..

And giac/xcas doesn't emulate a CAS, it is a real C++ CAS.. and much more (interactive geometry, progammable, RPN and algebraic input,..)

Have fun,
J.Manrique
