Residuals in HP41 BatteryCompartment

Good morning everybody!
(If you don't live in Central Europe replace the Good Morning Appropriately... ;) )

Below is a link to a picture showing the battery compartment of a HP-41CX. The seller claims that the unit never suffered any battery leakage in its life. I tend to believe him, since the contacts are indeed shiny and new. However, I nevertheless wonder which effect could cause the whitish rediuals on the bottom of the compartment?

Does anybody on the form have a good explanation for this (dust, a reflexion...???)
