48sx compared to 50g

#31

I have an HP-48sx and I'm considering upgrading to the 50g - how similar or different are they? All that that guy at HP support told me was that "everything you can do on a 48 you can do on a 50" but he really didn't get into specifics.

#32

You might try this:
http://www.hpcalc.org/hp49/docs/misc/49vs48.zip

It is for the 48gx vs. 49g but pretty close to what you want.

#33

Yeah, the 50g can do anything the 48SX can do, but I find that the 50g is much more cumbersome to use. The keyboard and menu layouts are a huge step backward compared to the 48. For example, MTH, PRG, and CST are all shifted keys on the 50g. Ugh! It's also a bit fiddly about working with the HP infrared printer, though most folks probably won't care about that detail.

I own both a 48SX and a 50g (among numerous others), and it's the 48SX that I keep on my desk at work. You don't have to take my word for it, though - download Debug4x and play around with the included 50g emulator a bit to get a feel for it. It does have some very nice added functionality compared to a 48, but for me, it's not worth the huge usability sacrifices.

True enough, at least as it comes from the factory, but please note that the USER keyboard can be anything you like... and if you use Prof. Dr. Rautenburg's lovely KEYMAN (and perhaps TOPKEYS as well), the sky's the limit. It allows both "long-hold" and "double-press" actions in addition to the usual no-shift, shift, and shift-hold modifiers, and allows all the shifted combinations with them as well, so one key can do a couple of dozen different things instead of just six or seven-- which leads to a different set of usability issues if these capabilities are over-used, naturally. These libraries are not specific to the 50g, but are also available for the 48GX.

Yes, that does work, but it leads to another non-optimal situation. If you use the user keys to group a set of related functionality that's used somewhat infrequently, you're out of luck. In my case, I've got some custom menus, user keys, and a custom Enter that speed up number base work. Being forced to leave the user keys on to remedy the very poor standard keyboard layout would prevent me from having this number-base-oriented keyboard layout ready when I need it. Either that or I'd be stuck with it full-time, which isn't really a workable option.

On a related note, I think adding the shift-and-hold key mappings was a bad idea. Anybody that's tried to go backward multiple pages in a menu on the 50g will know what I'm talking about. (Shift+Prev is actually Last Menu, so you have to keep alternately pressing and releasing the shift key, then the Prev key, or else you'll end up somewhere else entirely.) Plus some of the shifted functions on the number keys open up soft-key menus, but some open up choose boxes. And of those that open choose boxes, a select few will open soft-key menus if you do shift-and-hold. There's no real rhyme or reason to it, either.

And speaking of menus, why are there so many duplicates that differ just enough to be confusing? Try this on a 50g: hit Left-Shift, MTH, then pick HYP. Page through the menu with NXT, and notice it has the 6 hyperbolic trig functions, plus EXPM (e^x - 1) and LNP1 (ln(x + 1)). All well and good. Now hit Right-Shift, TRIG (on the 8 key), then pick HYP again. Once again, here are the 6 hyperbolic trig functions, but in a different order. Then hit NXT and notice this version of the menu doesn't have the two logarithmic functions! Now hit SYMB, then pick the TRIG menu. It's COMPLETELY different from the TRIG menu you get from Right-Shift, 8.

There are plenty of other examples of poorly thought-out menus. For instance, the SYMB key also has menus for CALC and ALG. These are, of course, completely different from the shifted CALC and ALG menus on the 4 key. Left-Shift, MATRICES (the 5 key) is quite different from MTH, MATRX, and MTH, CMPLX bears almost nothing in common with Right-Shift, CMPLX (the 1 key).

All in all, it makes for a very frustrating experience when you have to remember which of several subtly different versions of the same menu has the function(s) you're looking for. The 48 designers had the right idea - put the (mostly) numeric stuff under MTH, the symbolic manipulation functions under ALGEBRA/SYMBOLIC, low-level stuff in PRG, and give a couple more menus for stats, time, units, plotting, etc. In my opinion, if the 48SX had an un-shifted "clear stack" key like the 48GX, it would be perfect. (Let's just say I'm not fond of the 48GX having EDIT/VISIT and PURGE on adjacent same-shifted keys. I've fat-fingered it a couple times with LASTARG disabled...)

hello,

take a 50g, enable real mode, RPN mode, diable pull down menus (flag -117) and you have something that will behave prety much exactly like a 48SX, but much much faster, and with a larger screen and more memory...

you can always move keys that you use a lot on top of the keybaord with user key assignement....

The main key to move is the ENTER key, which I found difficult, since ENTER is an operation and can't be explicitly assigned to a key. I think I've done it by assigning the silly 'X' key in the center to an empty command, counting the stack in a variable and checking the stack pre- and post-, executing DUP as appropriate and then fixing the stack.

Hi;

I´d go for:

- USB comm port

- upgradable O.S.

- up to 2GBytes RAM (SD card)

- programming enhancements (somethings you can do with the 50G that cannot be done with the 48S)

- the 50G is way faster!

I experienced having to adapt some programs that ran O.K. in the 48SX and failed in the HP50G, mostly due to lists handling. Not that functionality was removed, in fact it was 'corrected'. A couple of functions (cannot remember now, should research to find) return a different number of elements to the stack in both the HP48S (48G and 49G as well) and the 50G. After the programs failed in thee 50G, I executed them with debug and then I realized that the HP50G did not need to detect a particular circumstance in lists handling because it maintained coherence with empty lists, while the 48G returned something different.

The programs dealt with fuzzy logic and were first written for the HP48S, but I needed some features in the 48G. Then they were ported to the HP49G (more memory), and later they failed to work with the HP50G. After being rewritten they worked fine and a lot faster.

Cheers.

To that I'd add - better (bigger & clearer) screen

The keyboard takes some getting used to, the moved ENTER key being the most irritating one. Otherwise it's quite a good and capable machine.

To that I'd add:
  1. The 50g can be easily replaced if lost or broken.
  2. The 50g can be programmed in C (if you are into that type of thing). (http://sense.net/~egan/hpgcc/)
If you are running Windows then download and install Debug4x and give it a try. If OS/X or Linux then try x49gp (http://x49gp.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/x49gp/README.QUICKSTART).

  • The 50g can be easily replaced if lost or broken.

  • Just to keep things in perspective, usually there are 10 or so 48sx's listed on eB** at any given time. I checked recent completed auctions, and found the average final selling price to be about $60. Some of these are near mint calculators, some have some wear but include accessories.

The 50g regularly sells for $150 new, but can sometimes be found for less than $100 "like new" on eB**.

The 48gx usually commands higher prices, but the OP specifically mentioned the SX for comparison.

My point is the the 48sx can also be easily replaced, so IMO the more significant comparisons are feature set, speed, and build quality.

IMHO this is in part due to the success of the 50G. Prior to the 50G, and in particular at the time of the bad rubber key 49G, I saw 48SX/GX selling for over $200 IIRC.

    #43

What I remember was 48GX going over $200 and even $300 for a short time, while 48G maybe $100, and 48SX $20 or $30 up to $60. Similarly, you could pick up 28C for $15 and a 28S for $25.

    #44

For the record, near the end of last year I bought one 48G for $34 including shipping, and another 48G for $41, including shipping. They are both in great shape, and twice as fast as my 48SX. (Incidentally, the 48Gs are a bit faster than the 48GX).

I do like my 50G, but I think I like the 48Gs a bit more.. label organization, keyboard buffer, the fact you can lay it on a desk and type, etc..

    Cheers.

    #45

Initially, I had gotten a 49g+ to replace my 48G and 48G+, since I found that despite the joy of using the 48G/G+ machines, they were on the fragile side. I did find, as some did, that the 49G+ was more cumbersome to use... but only at the start. Once you get used to it, it becomes as enjoyable as the 48G series units. Yeah, I might still enjoy using my 48G/G+ units slightly more, but that's like me still preferring my (now not really functional) 34C over the 32SII, 33s, and 35s- I believe this is based more on sentiment.

Then I got a 50g and it seems to be a noticeable improvement over the 49g+: it seems more solid and sturdy, as the 49g+ seemed to me only slightly less fragile than any of the 48 series calculators; there was the inclusion of an improved SD card capability; and apparently, more speed, particularly when it came to searching the SD card.

I tend to like the 50g more over the 48G or G+.

(Now if someone with the requisite skills would port over the Trek48 game to the 50g/49g+... )

    #46

Sure, but the 50g is still easier to replace. You can have a 50g same day or next day from several sources, e.g. I can drive to my local university bookstore and have a 50g in hand in less than 30 minutes. There is no guarantee that a working 48-anything will be on eBay exactly when you need it.

And lets not forget the memory card that many existing SX/GX owners require--not as easy to replace.

    #47

In comparision to the 48SX the 50G surely is an improvement.

BUT there ARE features on the 48SX or the 48GX who have been badly implemented in the 50G. The haptics on the 50G are not so good. And what bothers me most is the keyboard layout, menu system, etc. . Even after 6 months of 50G use I still don't feel at home and it is always a pleasure to do something on the 48.

    #48

As a compromise, get the 48G/GX/G+. Quite affordable on auction sites now (I got a mint condition 48GX for ~£30). They have libraries built-in that the 48SX had as optional plug-in RAM. The 48G+ has the same on-board RAM as the 48GX. All have IR and RS232. I don't see much use for X-pandability as the cards tend to cost more than the calculator. I like the 48G/GX/G+ features over the 48S/SX but prefer the colour scheme of the S/SX. Of course the 50G has much more built-in. And upgradable ROM. And easy to interface with current PCs (both SD card and USB), making it easy to back up your programmes and data or install updated/modified libraries, user cummunity developed features (e.g. C or Lua programming), etc.

    #49

For my own data point, I owned both the 48SX and the 49G+ (admittedly not the 50G; I got the 49G+ for ~US$50 when the 50G came out), and I just couldn't engender any joy for the 49G+. I agree that it's too cumbersome, and I would also add that w/r/t size, it's huge, feeling like a small textbook in my hands, and it's also not so miserly with battery use (which was I feature I adored with the 48SX).

I should admit that my calculator needs aren't that great, however, so it was probably a losing proposition for the 49G+ from the start. After a reasonable effort, I ended up selling it for the US$50 that I purchased it for, and kept using the 48SX at work.

Eventually I did end up selling the 48SX, because I came to regard it as overkill for my own calculator needs, and longed for the sleek simplicity (especially with storing values into registers) of my 15c. But I still have a big warm heart for the 48SX, and I regard it as their last great calculator.

Yeah, I know ... I do (mildly) regret getting rid of the HP 48sx, but:

I wasn't using it professionally; I was devoting my spare time to other hobbies; and lastly, I always have this compulsion to try to find "proper homes" (whatever they may be) for items of mine that aren't being used appreciably. Something that's designed to be used, when it just sits on a shelf or in a drawer, it feels like waste. Maybe I've watched "Toy Story" too many times.

I do wistfully check out the 48sx scene on eBay from time to time, however.

EDIT: Oh, and if I get rid of something I'm not using, it allows me to free up that money for something new.

    I own :
    HP48SX
    hp48GX
    HP48G+
    HP49G
    HP49G+
    HP50.

    i think HP50 is BAD calculator :

1- the general quality is bad, bad plastic.
    2- i don't like the design.
3- the keyboard does't works correctly.
4- the screen protection are smooth plastic.
5- the weight is too low.
6- the screen as too poor resolution.

in my opinion (only MY opinion) HP50 is like a toy, it's a low cost calculator, hp decided to produce a new calculator for a very low cost for THEM and an big price for US.

Seriously, i continue to work with my 48gx.
If hp decide to produce a new calculator in HIGH QUALITY i will return to HP but from now i've seen that TI NSPIRE calculator is made in a good quality, good case, nice design, good plastic, big screen, 16 grayscale lcd, correct price and probably assembly language programming in 1 or 2 month.
So i LOVE HP CALCULATOR but if they don't produce quickly a NEW GOOD QUALITY CALCATOR i'm going to TI calculator.

Here, my colleague think like me.

the only good thing of this calculator is the speed.

    Fabrice

Everyone is certainly entitled to his/her opinion. There are lots of folks on this forum who love the 50. I am not a fan of RPL, but I respect it's power and admire those who use it productively to solve problems. And I admire HP as well for continuing to produce programmable calculators that are second to none. The 30b is the latest example.

The TI NSpire was designed for students, not engineers. It has lots of features, but the tiny keys and lack of good screen contrast would be a major turn-off to many people. And the onboard programming language--TI Basic--is crippled by lack of any command to provide input during the running of a program (presumably, to prevent students from playing games during math class). I don't know of any engineer who would seriously consider the NSpire as his/her working calculator.

    #54

It was alleged of the HP50G:

    1. "quality is bad, bad plastic"? You evidently have never used the TI-89. The HP50G is mechanically an adequately sturdy device.

    2. "don't like the design"? That's not too descriptive. It's like saying "I don't like the weather we had in the 1990s."
    3. "keyboard doesn't work"? I've somehow missed this extreme defect for the three years that I've had a HP50G.

    4. "screen protection are smooth plastic"? Your HP48GX LCD has absolutely NO protection at all. Try dropping something on the screen, even something light from a low height. A permanent mark will likely remain. The HP50G has far superior LCD protection.
    5. "weight is too low"? What advantage is a heavy handheld? In fact, there's not much difference in a 48 (with three AA-cells) and a 50G (with four AA-cells).

    6. "screen as too poor resolution"? The HP50G LCD is a tremendous advance in clarity, and some advance in resolution, compared the extremely poor contrast slow LCDs of most 48-series units.

Then, "big price for US"? Check the prices of competing products. The HP50G is very inexpensively priced for its capability (currently about $125 from Amazon). It's always less expensive than the TI-89 Titanium. I have one HP48SX and two HP48GX machines, with various memory cards, all purchased as new equipment 15 to 20 years ago. The HP50G provides a tremendous value in capability compared to the 48-series.

    Plus:

    1. Have you noticed the distictions and advantages of HP50G inexpensive SD memory card capability versus the bulky, bizarre, proprietary, hard to use, poorly-powered and backed up, low-capacity, extremely expensive "Epsom-type" memory cards of the HP48-series?

    2. Have you noticed that you can't upgrade the firmware in your 48GX?

    3. Have you noticed that the HP48GX provides no debugging or development tools such as are standard on the 50G?

    4. Have you noticed that you can't apply external power to the 48-series?

My personal opinion: The HP50G is, *all* particulars examined, without any doubt the best handheld calculator ever made by HP, or by anyone else. Of course, the HP50G is not nearly perfect, nor is it the best in a number of specific areas. It's just simply the best *OVERALL*.

I have used HP calculators since the original HP-35 was released in 1972. I have more than 30 in my collection that I purchased for professional use when they were current production, between 1976 and 2009.

My three 48-series machines now collect dust...I'm just not willing to revert to using devices that are inferior to the similarly-sized HP50G.

Amen! I'm running to the shop to purchase mine... wait a minute, I can't program in RPL... but it can't be worse than 41 MCODE, or can it?

    #56

If RPL is too highlevel for you then consider SysRPL. Still too highlevel? Then go for
Saturn or ARM assembly. All of the above can be done on-board.

As for easier than 41 M-CODE. Well it depends on how easy M-CODE is for you. :-)

That's one of many reasons that the HP42S remains at the top of my list, with the HP50G, both for differing reasons.

It's too bad there couldn't have been both an RPL and an RPN programming environment on the HP50G. I miss my GTO statements!

    Hi Mike,

Yes, it would have been nice if 50g's Operating Mode menu item had the following choices:

    RPN

    RPL

    Algebraic*

Where RPN meant a classic RPN environment with a fixed stack height and the 41C/42S programming paradigm. RPL would mean the standard RPL environment which the current (somewhat mis-labelled) “RPN” mode choice activates. Another setting for stack height would be activated in RPN mode.

With the above said, although I am no expert (so all experts please pardon any stupid statements regarding the operation of the 50g), I think there several ways that an RPN programming environment could be had on the 50g:

    1. buy hrastprogrammer’s 41X or 42X emulators for the 50g.

    2. write your own 50g application in RPL to create an RPN environment

    3. write your own 50g application in C to create an RPN environment

    4. write your own whole new rom for the 50g to create an RPN calculator that could do anything you wanted, probably.

    * - I have no need for the Algebraic choice, but I won't require that they get rid of it :-)

I started down this path twice. The first was to port Free42 to the 50g, but its too large. The 2nd was a native RPN that used the 50g key assignments as-is. I'll probably never finish the 2nd. Hugh's Reckon may be the ticket.

Try a >2001 48GX with black LCD and SpeedUI it will make you change point of view ;)

In terms of hard/soft I must agree but please make them (48 and 50)work outside in bad conditions and a 48 with 15years is far more reliable than a new 50.

Some users make more importance to build quality than hard/soft capabilities...

    Regards,

    Nacho
