Testing an HP82242 IR Module with a digital camera (or...)

Hi, all;

maybe this is yesterday´s news, but it´s worth mentioning.

I was wondering about how to test an HP82242 without either an HP82240A/B or an HP48/49 with INPRT running. I remembered that I saw someone testing an IR control through a cell phone with a camera, and I decided to do the same with the HP82242. Needless to say it worked OK, the flashing IR emission was captured and shown.

I use one of these Radio Shack Radio Shack 276-1099 IR Sensors for the working/not working test and the Service Module to check the ROM.

I set 0 DELAY, put the IR module in TRACE, take a digital camera and turn it ON, execute CAT 2 in the HP41 and point the camera lens to the IR output, as if your camera is the IR printer (HP82242A/B). You´ll see the flashes of the IR LED in the display of the camera as if it is a white LED. You can use a cell phone with a camera, too; works the same. I also tested with a MP5 with a camera. You just need to point the camera straight to the IR output.

This test only lets you know if the IR output is emitting anything, not if the data is valid. In this case, you´d need an HP82240A/B or something else to analyze the output data, right?

If you do not succeed let me know and I´ll try to capture it in a short movie.
