Hello,
Are there any precautions I should be aware of when buying a USB to serial adaptor for my 48GII? I am under the impression that I need a USB connection to dump the ROM. I am using Conn4x for PC to 48GII communication.
Thanks!

It depends. If your HP48Gii already has Xmodem, then it should work fine. The adapter itself will register in the USB port as "new hardware", and you will install the drivers that came with the adapter. Once installed, it will show up in Windows Device Manager as a new serial port, which on my computer is COM3. When you connect your calc and run Xmodem, then Conn4x will find it on the new serial port. However, I have an HP-48SX, which does not have Xmodem, so I had to copy the file XSrvr48.hp from the Conn4x folder to my old DOS PC and then upload it via serial cable and Kermit from the PC to the calc. After that I had to attach it to the library in the calc before it could be run. One other caveat. If you also have a HP-50g with a USB port that you are connecting to your PC, its USB drivers will be overwritten by those for the adapter, and it will no longer be recognized by the USB port. You would have to re-install those drivers, at which point the drivers for the adapter would be overwritten. Since I have a HP-50g, it was not worth the hassle, so I am no longer using the adapter. What I do instead is connect the HP-48SX to HP-50g via serial cable and connect the HP-50g to the PC via USB. Hope this wasn't too confusing. Michael ▼

Great information Michael. I only have a 48GII and it has Xmodem built into it. As a matter of fact, that is what I use to connect using the serial cable. Do you or anyone else happen to know if I can dump the ROM using only the USB connection. ▼

I don't know why it would matter. Either way, you are connecting via serial. In one case it is a primary COM port on your PC, in the other it is being emulated, but as far as your PC and the calc are concerned there is no difference. As long as the communication protocols are the same (Xmodem) and the settings such as BAUD and translation code match, then it should work either way.

Yes there are precautions, because you don't need an adapter. Your calculator should have come with a USB cable and your calculator is a USB device which should plug right into your computer (using the USB cable provided). If you don't have the cable for your calculator, you can purchase one, or find another device that you already own that uses the same cable. The cable is a USB-A to USB-MINI-B (some please comment if I got this wrong). If you own an MP3 player (not IPOD), Camera Card reader, PDA or digital Camera, there is a reasonable chance you already have a cable that will work. Best of luck ... Chuck ▼

Quote: Chuck, All I can say for myself is "DUH!". I looked right at that mini USB on the calculator side and did not make the connection, so-to-speak. My 48GII came with a serial cable. Of course, I have many of the USB-A to USB-MINI-B cable around here. It has been so long since I worked with the HP connectivity and programming. I had my 48G+ for so long before the keys gave out. I no longer need ALL the features of the old girl but still wanted RPN and some programming capability. Thanks for your input. Carl

Why dump the ROM when you can download the ROM? It in debug4x as ROM.49G or Google file:ROM.49G. The latest 48GII has both USB and Serial ports on them (same as 50g). With the 50g you can transfer equally as well via USB or Serial. Via Serial you need a special cable (http://commerce.hpcalc.org/serialcable.php), via USB, just a standard USB cable (no need for serial to USB). You would only need a USB to serial adapter if you wanted to use the 48GII serial port with the special cable to a PC that did not have a serial port. As for ROM dumping, I have no idea if it dumps to a file and you transfer or if you have to dump to cable. If you have to dump to file then USB or Serial should be fine. ▼

Quote: Egan, Since I am new to the 48GII, I did not realize its ROM is as you have stated. Thanks for the info. I wanted the ROM for Emu48. I find it is easier to try out programs by typing on my keyboard as opposed to keying into the calculator. As I stated in a previous reply, my 48GII came with a serial cable. Probably an older version. I am going to try the USB connection Chuck mentioned. Thanks for your help. Carl ▼

EMU48 is part of debug4x, get that and you will have EMU48 setup to emulate everything from the 48GX to the 50g.

Quote: I just tried an internet search for ROM.49G. Interesting results: http://www.onehanesplace.com/webapp/commerce/command/ExecMacro/BraFinderResult.d2w/report?Bra_Size=48G&tqty=6&feature1=&feature2=&feature3= Oh yeah, there was also some stuff about calculators! Carl

You need to install the HP 48g, 49g, 50g series Calculator Connectivity Kit. If you cannot find it try this link, however I do not know if this is the latest version. ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software7/COL4344/ca-14082-8/Conn4x_English.exe Google for a newer version if this does not work for you. If you also use Linux or Mac, then search for HPTalk (Linux) or HPConnect (Mac). ▼

I think he already has Conn4x installed. He just needs to start the new hardware wizard and browse for the drivers in the folder C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Conn4x\USBDriver. ▼

Well, still no luck. I see the drivers, but I cannot get them to install. When I connect the 48gii via USB I see an "Unknown Device" in my hardware device manager. When I try to install the driver from here or from the balloon that pops up at the lower right of my monitor, the computer can either not find it, even though I give it the location, or it tells me it is the wrong driver. Go figure!

I have version 2.3 (2003 - 2006). I am going to check for a newer version. Thanks again. ▼

Well, looks like I have the most recent version. I guess I can do without the USB connection. |
