HP 48GX or HP 50G?

#11

Hello,

I own an HP 48SX with a 128Kb memory card.

I've tried to download the Meta Kernel program, but it doesn't seem to be working. Does the MK need an HP 48GX to work properly? (although I didn't find anything saying that it wouldn't on an 48SX.)

Anyway, if I can't use the MK with my HP 48SX, I would like to know which is the best: buying an HP 48GX upgraded to MK or an HP 50G?

I'm also interested in ML programing, I think the HP 50G has everything installed in memory (MASD...).

Thanks for your answers.

Oh, I forgot to mention: I get this annoying message at start "Invalid card data". I'm supposed to use the 'PINIT' command but when I type it, nothing happens (it appears on the stack).

Chris.

Hi Chris,

If you search the forum archives a bit, you'll find more than one discussion of hp48 vs. hp50. Sorry I can't help you with your other questions, but I'm strictly RPN so far d:-)

Actualy no, even using the several eons option :-(.

Hello,

my usual suggestion is to get an HP-48GX, and load the SpeedUI package into it.

That's a real and up-to-date alternative to the very outdated MK for the HP-48.

SpeedUI accelerates nearly every part of the UI,

adds new features to the UI, and is very modular.

And if you really want to develop SysRPL/ML on the machine,

you can use JAZZ as kinda plug-in for SpeedUI.

However, if you really want to use the quirky MASD syntax, get a 50g...

About the memory card error: IIRC the SX doesn't have the PINIT command,

but there's an easy way to initialize the card.

Just MERGE it, then free it again. But note that the FREE command takes a list parameter,

which holds the objects to be moved from Port 0 to the freed card.

Consult the User Manual for details.

Outdated? I thought the MK was still used nowadays in the 50G? (Or is it a newer and much better version?)

Is SpeedUI compatble with the HP 48SX? I've never
tried JAZZ; MASD has always been hepful when I begun ML.

Hopefully, you could use both (JAZZ or MASD).

Strange things happens sometimes: the error message disappeared this morning...

Hi,

to answer your questions in short:

IIRC the latest MK version for the HP-48 dates from about fourteen years ago.

It was in beta stage at best, and there's no support of any kind for that version.

The 'MK' fiddled into the 49g/50g is a much newer beast...

I had thought about an SX version of SpeedUI,

but there were very few responses so far,

and after all the G+/GX offers much more in every respect:

More RAM, more ROM, more features, more speed, much better display, etc...

Someone ported JAZZ to the 49g/50g.

Get both, but if you have to pick one then I'll have to weigh in on the side of the 50g. I have a 48GX and it's a great machine and it has served me well from 1993 until 2006 (and its as perfect as the day I got it). In 2006 I opted to give the 50g a try and I was not disappointed for the following reasons:

  1. Faster.
  2. Larger, easy to read display (if you get a 48GX, get the black/white display).
  3. SD Card for file I/O. No more RAM cards.
  4. Serial, USB, and IR I/O.
  5. Has emulators (as does 48GX)
  6. Can be programmed in C.
  7. Is easily replaceable.
  8. Cheaper than 48GX (~$100US).
The 50g keyboard is not as good as the 48GX. Key placement and feel could be improved. I also expect my 50g to fail before my 48GX. I'll simply get another or replace it with then next thing (if any good). There is more software for the 48GX.

#18

Doesn't most if not all USER RPL programming for the 48 work on the 50?

#19

Yes it does, but the 48GX still has more software if you count all the SysRPL and ASM code that does not work on the 50g. Code that I never run, so it was never an issue for me.

I was an original purchaser of an HP48SX in 1991, and of two HP48GX units in 1997. These were enough to convince me then that after more than 20 years as an HP calculator user, I wouldn't be buying any more. I found them rather disappointing. The LCDs must be the poorest quality (unless you find one of the very late black/white LCD units) that have ever been put on any graphing calculator. The display is rather easily damaged. The hardware is very slow. Accessories were (and are) very expensive for what you get. The color scheme of the body and the labeling is "left-coast artsy" crowd inspired, with very poor contrast.

Then, I bought a used HP49g+ for $20. I was amazed at the excellent LCD quality, speed, and CAS (MK) firmware. Sure, there were keyboard quality and a few cosmetic issues. But I liked it enough to buy a new HP50g when it came out. It is a far better performer, with outstanding built-in fuctions (including essential financial and enhanced MK functions) than the HP48GX could ever be. Very important too is the SD memory card support and the ability to easily upgrade the firmware (Try that with an HP48!). The only thing I like much better about the HP48GX is the display format of date and time.

I rank the HP50g and my HP42S as the finest calculators of their type ever made. I carry them both in my briefcase. All my many other HPs purchased in the last 32 years just satisfy my antique-collecting obsession.

#21

I have almost completely different views. First your taste about colours is for yourself, I for one like HP-48 ones more than the rest and I'm not colour blind. Secondly all accessories I ever bought were worth their money million times. I never bought HP-49 - it was non-HP calculator as I saw it, it looked and felt cheap. As a professional surveyor (and we press a lot of buttons) I find HP49 useless as well as HP49+ and HP50 - more of the same !@#$.
The HP-42S is ok and can be made brilliant in the form of Thomas Okken's free42 with some enhancements as far as I'm concerned.

Regards,
Reth

I new the answer wouldn't be just black or white.

My only concern is not being able to use programs written for the HP 48GX on a 50G (RPL, SysRPL and ML).

I've heard of some issues with the keyboard on older versions of the 50G, I hope it's not the case anymore.

@Egan: thanks, I was expecting such an answer about the 50G. This is why I'm still wondering which is best: quality and compatibility vs speed and capacity.
