Very interesting. Especially for someone like me who couldn't attend.
Thanks for that!

The price tag including worldwide shipping is so low that I guess you're not earning anything with it. Wouldn't a torrent for the divx files save you work and time? I would even pay for it.

Well, perhaps the torrent of divx files would save copying and mailing for those who would be willing to download it, but that pales in comparison to the time creating the DivX files, since the individual presentations are encoded one at a time. So 14-15 hours of material requires at least 45 hours, divided up into many chunks (albeit not requiring "babysitting" the computer the whole time). Step one, of course, is capturing the video (in real time) from the master tapes into my computer in AVI files. Also, since I like to control how the DivX files are made, I generally extract and encode the audio first, then build the DivX files using VirtualDub. The other thing is since taping and editing the conference requires roughly $200. of mag tape (since it was a two-camera shoot using nine 83-minute MiniDV tapes in each camera, plus 6 full-sized 270-minute DV tapes to hold the edited master video), I always fantasize that if enough copies sell, it will defray the expenses somewhat. Also this year, shipping the tripods in a suitcase in a checked bag ended up costing money since the airlines started charging for checked baggage. It's complicated, but I think there is merit to having the archived stuff afterward.

Thanks,

Jake
