HP 41C Card Reader Metal Strip

#2

Recently I bought a HP 41C card reader. It turned out to have the gummy wheel syndrome. I opened it .. THANKS TO MARK HOSKINS GREAT WRITE UP .. and found that the jello was all over. It also seeped into the card chamber. As his article did not address that part of the repair, I took it upon my-self to open the forbidden chamber. Anyway, now I have a copper metal strip left over and I do not know where it came from, but I know it was in the forbidden chamber.

I used heat shrink tubing, without crazy glue, to get the wheel working. It turns out I had to use multiple sizes to get to the diameter of the correct size. Because of the sticky nature of the heat shrink tubing it grabbed on to the metal axle as tight as glue.

So the short story is that the card reader is working again but I have this thin copper metal strip left over and I would like to put it back where it belongs.

Any suggestions and ideas will be greatly appreciated. The metal strip is like the one in the picture, however, I had straightened mine because the ends had folder over for some reason. But I can curve it again, I have the tools.

Where does this strip actually go in the card reader?

The curved copper strip fits into a slot in between the to sandwiched plastic halves. The slot should almost match the curvature of the copper strip.

Yes. There's two of them in the hp-65 and hp-67 readers. Probably the same for the hp-41 reader. They act like springs and push against the side of the card while the card's in the reader. Probably helps keep the card aligned.

Thanks to all, and I greatly appreciate it. I found the strip its right place and it is back in the reader.

The place was actually a trapezoid.
