Did HP 65 originally include hard case in the box?

#12

Hi, Did the HP 65 originally come with a hard case in the box, or was that an extra purchase option?

It came with a soft pouch in a big plastic case (similar to the cases seen frequently for the other Classics) by default. I don't remember anybody walking around with HP calcs in hard cases that time.

I think what you're calling a "big plastic case" is the same thing I referred to as a "hard case". It's that sorta greenish hard plastic case with room for the hp 65, soft leather case, manual, etc.

Your answer seems to indicate that the plastic case was included in the original box and was not an option.

The term "box" you are using is confusing at least for me. I'd call that plastic case a "box". IIRC there was no further packaging material passed to the proud buyer.

Hopefully not making things more confusing, but: My HP-65 came with a grey HP cardboard box which contained the green hard case including the calculator, leather pouch, etc. I still have the original HP cardboard box for the HP-65 set.

Wow! I didn't know this was going to be so complicated.

My definitions:

box: a HP-65 cardboard box that everything came in.

hard case: The greenish plastic hard case with room for the hp-65 calcs, leather pouch, charger and manual. Designed for keeping and transporting the hp65 and accessories.

pouch: The leather pouch with pockets for the calculator, quick reference guide, and mag cards case that you could put on your belt.

My original question was: Did the "hard case" come in the "box" with the hp-65 and "pouch" or was it an option? From the answers I've gotten, it looks like the "box" did indeed always include the "hard case". Thanks again.

I agree.. I recently sent Dave full scans of a HP35/45/80 CLASSIC brochure showing the optional accessories offered at the time. The Field case is among them, and I have not seen one included by default (There is not a place in the plastic box to include it.)

Hi Allen,

Please remember:

  1. Mr. Leibniz was talking about calculation not mathematics,
  2. he was talking about men not pupils/students,
  3. this is an isolated sentence selected as an ad for calculators.

Still this is not too far fetched, considering we were forced to use trig tables in the 80s (in school) - instead of electronic calculators capable of doing trig functions. Only 4-function calculators were allowed at that time :/
The difference "manual calculation" - "mechanical calculation" is comparable.

Hallo Frank,

my post was referring implicitely to another thread about calculator (ab)use in math classes in the USA. So there was a history you presumably were not aware of, but Allen knew.

BTW - don't complain: we had no choice in the early 70s - slide rules and trig tables were the state of the art in "classroom technology". Nevertheless or therefore, we learned "educated guessing", something I still appreciate very much. Prevents me (most times) from posting a wrong order of magnitude, or believing in 4 digit results of industrial measurements.
