It is not realistic to learn the HP49g/HP50g from HP's printed manual. It has many problems, but foremost among them is the way it continually skips around between the different modes. At best this will leave your head spinning. I recommend using this tutorial. After going thru the first 10 lessons or so you will be up and running and confident in the basics:
