Plea for HP-41 User Contributed Programs

#13

There was a program where users could contribute HP-41 programs and then other users could purchase these for a fairly nominal fee. Over the years, there have been several discussions here about whatever happened to all these programs. Dave Hicks has some, but it's only a drop in the bucket compared to the total that were contributed.

Thanks to John Ferman's donation, I have 25 user contributed programs and am in the process of scanning them in to forward to Dave to include on future DVD's.

Since these were contributed by the users for redistribution, I don't believe there was any copyright either by the users or by HP. So there souldn't be any problems with making this material available. Similar to what I did when I scanned in the TI material a few years ago for Gene Wright, I am deleteing from the scans all the personal data with the exception of the contributer's name. Any address or other personal data will be erased from the scan. This allows for credit to be given without releasing unnecessary personal data.

I'm sure that many others here have copies of some of these user contributed programs. I would like to make a plea for you to donate them to the DVD project so that others might also make use of them.

Anyone wishing to donate them but who doesn't have the time or scanner to scan them in - I'll try to make it easy for you. Send them to me, I will Scan them in, and then return them to you. All it will cost you is postage to me and a little time to mail it. I will pay for the postage to return it to you. Couldn't be easier.

It would also be nice to have a copy of the User Contributed Library Book that listed the available programs, so that I can keep track of what programs have already been scanned.

Any takers??

Just emal me through the HPmuseum site.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi, Bill:

Assuming you're talking about the late HP User's Library programs in their original HPUL forms, I might be able to contribute a number of them.

Since the originals are far too precious to send them over the mail (accidents do happen and things do get lost) I suggest you tell us some pretty specific format for the scans for uniformity purposes (file type, bit depth [aka number of colours], width, height) and I'll scan and send them to you with my blessings.

As scanned images of resolution high enough to be earily readable tend to be pretty large, they're probably difficult to send as e-mail attachments, as we're talking a sizable number of megabytes for the whole program documentation so I also suggest you previously arrange some storage space of yours (or Mr. Hicks' perhaps) where interested people could submit their scans, via ftp most likely.

Also, I would also suggest you to extend your plea to HP-67 programs, as there were many times more of them in the HPUL than HP-41C's, and virtually all of them can be loaded and run on an HP-41C most easily if you happen to also own the 41C Card Reader. So this is also an invaluable source of software for HP-41C users.

Finally, this will mean quite an effort on the part of people who will search their cellars and garages for old HPUL programs and then proceed to painfully scan them and ftp them up to you, so it would be expected that all that effort doesn't go to waste in case you decide to change your mind after a while or something. In other words, a definite commitment on your part is expected, rain or snow, to carry on with the project come what may. This I assume to be the case or you wouldn't be publicly offering your time and money (postage), but you could make it explicit by getting out of your present anonymity. I for one wouldn't be comfortable spending my very, very scarce free time and doing a considerable effort to send valuable materials to an anonymous individual. Think about it.

Everything above assuming the copyright to these old HPUL programs in their original HPUL forms is cleared, i.e., current HP incarnation doesn't mind. Else, all bets are off.

Best regards from V.

Hi Valentin,

Thanks for your reply.

You assume correct.

Understood.

I’m using the format that Dave requires for his scans. In this case, I’m scanning 300 DPI B&W to TIFF, using a image program to erase personal data from the tiff, and then creating a PDF of the result. The ones I have are standard letter size (8.5” x 11”), so am scanning to that size. I also take the time to use the imaging program to remove artifacts from the scans, such as staple marks, 3-hole punch marks, crease marks, and other such artifacts. Takes time, but cleans up the resulting scans.

I think Dave has an upload directory already setup to receive scans and pdf files. Uploading directly to Dave will eliminate any problems that anyone may have that I am attempting to accumulate these programs for my own personal uses.

Good Ideal – Consider the plea extended.

Then don’t send the scans to me!! Send them to Dave. All I want to see is that these programs become available for others to enjoy.

I prefer to not use my full name on any Web Site. I do attempt to use a consistent signature (Bill (Smithville, NJ)). That way all my posts through out the internet forums have the same signature.

There are quite a few people on this site who I have corresponded with, spoken by phone with and have personally met. Many individuals here do have my real name. You also can have my real name and I will email it to you with my address, work address and phone numbers off the list. I would appreciate you NOT using it on the list, but there is nothing I can do to stop you from doing whatever you please.

As I mentioned earlier, several years ago, along with Dave Ramsey, I scanned in some of the TI user program library and other TI documents for Gene Wright’s web site. These were 4-5 inches of documents, many in stressed condition. I think Gene will agree that the results were worth it. Many months were spent doing it.

This is a hobby to me and takes second place to my personal home life, my grandchildren, my work and many other items in my life. As such, I make no promises that I will do these scans in any expedited sense of the word. But they will get done!

Well, I guess “all bets are off” – I really doubt if “current HP incarnation” would even know what these are and as such would revert back to “no way” in giving approval.

So where do we go from here?

Quite a large collection of HP user library programs are available here:

http://neko.com/

Where you will find 202 HP 67/97 PDFs, 45 HP 41 PDFs, (most of THESE scans are user library solutions) and 34 miscellaneous HP calculator PDFs (many of these are scans from programs listed in the PPC Journal).

This site also has a lot of TI 59 user library programs on it.

Among them are 136 scans of games for the TI 59.

Dave Ramsay (hi buddy!) did these scans around the time that Bill did some TI scans. These came from a former PPC Member who had passed away. He had a very large collection of user library programs which are now, thanks to these guys, available to all in PDF format.

Enjoy and let's enlarge the collection!

Thanks for reminding us about these. I'm pretty sure I have them downloaded somewhere, so I'll have to compare them to the ones I just got to see if any duplicates.

I'll be happy to add any additional programs to the site. (Hi Gene!)

BTW, it's "Ramsey" with an "e"...

...And let us not forget the origin of this User's Library - The HP65. I realize these may not be of as much interest to 67/41 users, but this is the original library.

I had a number of programs accepted, and as such had received a number of other library submissions. Also, I do have (in my archives) the library catalog.

If there is interest, I can scan in my submissions, my programs I 'purchased' and/or exchanged and the catalog if there is interest.

Fantastic! Just contact Dave once you get them scanned and he will advise you of how to upload them.

I had originally only been thinking of the HP-41 (since I have one) but had forgotten that the User Contributed Library also included the 65/67/97.

Thanks,

Bill

I second the HP-65 library.

When I made the original post, my intent was to encourage others that had these programs to contribute them to Dave's DVD documentation project. This could be done in several ways:

1. A person has copies of the programs AND has the time and capability to scan them in and create PDF files that he can then upload to Dave.

2. A person has copies but does NOT have either the time or capality to scan them but who DOES wish to contribute to the DVD project. In this case, I would be willing to furnish the time and the scanning capability to see that they get uploaded to Dave.

In the second case, it should be noted that if someone is nervous about mailing the originals - xerox copies could be made and sent. Depending upon the quality of the original, I think in most cases the copies would still be usable for a scan.

While my original post only referred to HP-41 programs, it has been pointed out that there were also HP-65/67/97 programs and that these should also be included. I totally agree.

I hope that the above helps to clarify my original intentions.

Bill

I posted this some time ago.

http://www.hpmuseum.org/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/hpmuseum/articles.cgi?read=709

You may want to include it in to extend the number further. I have a number of the articles but I believe these would be covered by copyright and so can't be included on a DVD. Contact me if you want the original Excel spreadsheet I compiled.

The HP European club programme listings are on the DVD.

I spent a little time this weekend thinking about how I would like to see the files for the User's Program Library.

For a test, I have scanned in No. 00057C, which was contributed by Hewlett-Packard and is titled "Chebyshev, Legendre, Hermite and Laguerre Polynomials". The program has been entered into the V41 HP-41 emulator and the file saved in RAW format. I then used HP41UC to create a text file of the program listing and to create PCL and PS Barcode print files. I was able to print the PCL file and then use the Wand to read the Barcodes. I was unable to test the PS file.

I wanted to create a Zipped up package of files that would include a scan of the original library submission, RAW file that could be used in an emulator, a better quality program listing, and files that could create Barcodes so that the wand could be used to directly input the programs into an actual HP-41C.

I would like to have a few people here review the package before I proceed with scanning the remaining Library Submissions that I have. In particular, I would like comments on if you feel the package is usable or if there might be other items that should be included. I would also appreciate several people testing the Barcode files (both PCL and PS) to make sure there are usable.

Please E-mail me throught the HPmuseum and I'll email you the zipped up file. It's a small file at less than 10K in size.

Thanks,

Bill
