Listening to Dave Cochran's interview, that makes perfect sense, because he kept indicating that Bill Hewlett would repeatedly ask about the pocket-size version of the 9100 - and that was programmable. Had Bill been asking for only a non-programmable version, you'd think Dave C. would have mentioned that Bill suggested such a beast. I'd bet that he simply asked for a "pocket version of the 9100" and left it at that, and my guess is that after the HP35 team did their research, they probably came back to Bill and said that they could only do the non-programmable one first.
